The Renault Scenic RX4 is a four-wheel drive version of the Scenic, which was in production from 2000 to 2003. It combined the practicality of the MPV with versatile with surprisingly good off-road ability, although its rivals are compact SUVs such as the Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 rather than the Land Rover or Jeep.

The 4x4 RX4 variant of the popular MPV was launched in Morocco by Renault in 2000, alongside the facelifted Scenic.

 

Renault Scenic RX4 (2000 - 2003)

The Scenic RX4 is easily distinguishable from the regular Renault Scenic because of the increased ride height, protective plastic mouldings and spare wheel on the rear hatch. The Scenic RX4 has rugged looks that make sure you know that it''ll be equally comfortable in town as in a muddy field.

The RX4 also has a new front bumper with integral nudge bar, flared composite front wings and larger electric door mirrors. The spare wheel had to be hung from the tailgate as the space that was used for the wheel well was partly taken up by the re-engineered rear suspension. The suspension is strengthened overall, and the split tailgate has a side hinge and separate lift-up glass hatch. The increased ground clearance allows for better suspension during travel.

The part-time four-wheel drive offered by the Scenic RX4 enables off-road driving. Normally, the front/rear drive split is 80/20 but more torque is automatically transferred to the rear when wheelspin is detected via the viscous, multi-disc central differential, which is designed by Austrian specialists Steyr Daimler Puch. Two engines were available on the Scenic RX4: a 2.0-litre 16v petrol with 137 bhp and a 1.9-litre dCi with 101 bhp. Both were paired with a modified five-speed manual gearbox. Neither engines offer particularly great fuel economy, with the petrol returning an average of 29.7 mpg and the diesel 38.2 mpg.

Two trim levels were offered on the Scenic RX4 from launch: the Sport Alize and the top of range Monaco. The Sport Alize included air conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, height and lumbar adjustable driver''s seat, front foglamps, CD player, trip computer, ABS, auto-locking at 6 mph, traction control and two electric sunroofs. The Monaco trim, which cost an extra £1,200, added leather-faced seats and steering wheel, fully automatic climate control, rear electric windows, roof bars and a six-disc CD autochanger. Both versions came with a handy air conditioning-cooled centre console drinks box and plenty of oddment storage. From summer 2001, these trim levels were changed to Expression, Privilege and Privilege Monaco.
