Renault first launched the Twizy in 2012, as a battery-powered two-passenger vehicle. Designed and marketed by the French manufacturer, the Twizy is built entirely in Valladolid, Spain at Renault''s plant. In Europe the Twizy is classified as a heavy quadricycle, with the Urban 45 lower powered model classed as a light quadricycle. It has sold well across many European countries, particularly Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

The Twizy was a continued effort by Renault to extend their Zero Emissions (Z.E) Programme, with Autocar praising its loveable character in a field that is becoming more and more saturated as the years pass. The lively driving style of the Twizy is another of its defining features, with Renault''s inhouse performance specialist, Renaultsport, tasked with working on the chassis to provide a ride that handles well and is fun to drive.

 

Renault Twizy (2012 - Present)

Renault first unveiled the Twizy in 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor show, as a concept car. The Twizy was designed to be an electric vehicle that sat within Renault''s on-going Zero Emissions Programme. Later, in 2010, Renault announced a rebadged version of the Twizy called the NMC, or New Mobility Concept, but it wasn''t until 2011 that Renault announced that production of the Twizy would begin.

At the beginning of 2012 Renault released the Twizy for the French market, with sales in the UK and other European countries following shortly after. It was designed to be an ultra-compact vehicle, with a length of just 7ft 7in and a width of 3 ft 11in. Although slight in stature the Twizy was designed to be a safe choice for drivers, with the frame and body designed to offer occupants as much protection as possible. The outboard position of the wheels paired with lateral beams on the chassis provide side impact protection, which complements the driver''s airbag, four-point safety belt for the driver and three-point belt for the rear passenger.

The Twizy was available in three models, with prices in the UK starting at around £6,900. The entry level Expression model, larger goods-carrying Cargo model and high spec Dynamique models are currently available when bought new from Renault. When launched the Twizy was not sold with the battery pack included; instead, it was leased from the manufacturer for a monthly fee which also included roadside assistance and a battery replacement guarantee.

As with other models in Renault''s Z.E range, the Twizy is equipped with an easy-to-charge lithium-ion battery. According to the Renault website the Twizy can be recharged in around 3 and a half hours from a domestic socket, with the urban cycle providing a driving range of around 50 miles. The battery can be fully recycled when it reached the end of its lifespan.

In 2012 the Twizy was named as the top-selling plug-in electric vehicle in Europe, high praise for the French manufacturers electric efforts. Statistics show that since it launched 15,000 Twizy vehicles have been sold worldwide by early 2015, with European countries including Germany, France, Spain and Italy the best-selling markets.
