SEAT Ibiza Common Problems and Solutions
Overly Vibrating Engine
Problem:
The engine is vibrating excessively and tends to hesitate.
Solution:
This could be a problem with your coils. Inspect yours for any faults. You might be able to repair any damaged coils, but in some cases, you will need to purchase and fit replacements. We offer a selection of coils suitable for your Ibiza.

Hard to Start and Pulling is Poor
Problem:
The engine starts, but it's difficult to get it running. It also pulls poorly, especially uphill. You might also notice that the engine malfunction warning light is on.
Solution:
This is a timing chain tensioner fault. You will need to order your replacement and fit it. You can find your replacement part right here.

Tapping Sound When Driving
Problem:
You can hear a tapping noise coming from the front of the car while driving.
Solution:
Your rear bearing on the lower suspension arm is either broken or has come loose. Check if it's just come free, and if so, simply snap it back into place. If it's broken, you will need to purchase a replacement using our parts list. This can be a straightforward job to do yourself.

Noise from Front Suspension
Problem:
When you're driving, you might hear a thumping noise from the front of the car. This usually occurs especially when you're driving over rough surfaces.
Solution:
Your front shock absorbers have become weakened due to oil loss. Unfortunately, the damage is already done, and you will need to order replacement front shock absorbers. We offer a range of front shock absorbers suitable for different models and years of your Ibiza.

Trim rattling
Problem:
It is quite common to hear the interior trim rattling in this car.
Solution:
You will need to precisely identify which trim is rattling and refit it to stop the noise.

EGR valve problem
Problem:
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve can become blocked with carbon, leading to poor performance. A common sign of this issue is a loud noise coming from the exhaust. The engine management warning light will probably appear on the dashboard with this fault.
Solution:
You can clean out the carbon build-up from the EGR valve to resolve this issue. Have a look at the video below to see how it's done:

Valve problems
Problem:
There have been known cases when the valves are not functioning properly on the Ibiza. A good indicator of this issue is low oil levels.
Solution:
If you've noticed low oil levels, have the car examined. If the valves are found to be faulty, you will need all of them replaced. Although this can be costly, if the car is still under warranty, SEAT should cover the costs.

Windscreen washer jet failure
Problem:
The Ibiza is known for issues with the washer jet pipes cracking. These pipes can split in very cold temperatures. If you notice that the washer jets are not spraying any liquid onto the windscreen and you can hear the pump working, the cracked pipe is likely the cause of your problem.
Solution:
You will need to identify where the pipe has split and install a new pipe to fix the problem.
Difficulty level
Sticky Clutch
Problem:
The clutch occasionally sticks in position while driving.
Solution:
The Seat Ibiza is a very reliable car, but it can be much thirstier than other makes and models. If your clutch has started to stick, then it's a sign that you haven't been filling up your oil enough. Check your oil levels and top up as needed, and your clutch should return to normal.

Rattle Coming From Engine
Problem:
While driving, you might hear a rattling noise coming from the front of the car.
Solution:
This issue affects only the 1.2-litre TSI petrol versions due to a faulty timing chain. You should address this early to prevent serious damage to other parts of the vehicle. Replacing a timing chain is a quick process, and you can order yours from us with delivery.

Hand Brake Travel is Excessive
Problem:
When you lift the handbrake into the park position, it has to travel much further than you might expect.
Solution:
This affects Ibizas manufactured between May 2017 and November 2018 and is caused by an incorrectly fitted adjuster nut. Usually, you will just need to readjust the assembly and fit a locking device to the existing nut. However, if you leave this issue unresolved for too long, it will cause unnecessary wear on your handbrake unit, and you will eventually need to replace it using our Ibiza spare parts page.
