Suzuki SX4 Common Problems and Solutions
ESP warning light
Problem:
If the ESP warning light has appeared on the dashboard, it is usually caused by a software fault.
Solution:
Updating the software should resolve the issue.

Early brake wear
Problem:
The SX4 is known for wearing down the brakes very quickly. If you hear a squealing noise coming from the brakes, it indicates that the brakes are binding. You will hear this noise more when driving at speeds below 30 mph. If this is not addressed as soon as possible, the brake discs will become damaged.
Solution:
You will need to replace the brake pads to resolve this issue. Also, be sure to check the discs for signs of damage and replace them if necessary. The video below shows how to change the brake pads on the SX4.

Electric problems
Problem:
Are you having problems with the electrics on your SX4? There is a cable underneath the bonnet, which is prone to rubbing against the strut tower on the drivers side, causing it to short out. These electrical problems can vary from electric mirrors to interior lights.
Solution:
To prevent this problem, insulate the cable with some insulating tape or foam. Also, check that the wire inside the cable is not damaged, because if it is, you may need to repair the wiring. This should resolve your electrical issues.

Heater core failure
Problem:
Are you having trouble with the heaters not functioning properly? This is often caused by the heater core, which is known for leaking. If this is the case, you may also have noticed wet patches on the front foot wells and/or smell of the heater core inside the cabin.
Solution:
You will need to replace the heater core to resolve this issue. However, it can be a very expensive part to replace, but we can help you find one at a very low price.

Sticking Accelerator Pedal
Problem:
The accelerator pedal sticks and no longer moves smoothly as it used to.
Solution:
You will most likely have carbon build-up on the throttle shaft. Sometimes, this can be caused by using a harsh cleaning fluid on the throttle shaft, but regardless of the cause, the entire throttle body will need replacing. You can find one easily on our list of parts for the Sx4, and there are plenty of online tutorials that will show you the best way to carry out the repair.

Popping Out of 5th Gear
Problem:
When driving in 5th gear, it occasionally ‘pops’ out.
Solution:
This usually occurs when the car has travelled over 78,000 miles and is caused by a faulty 5th gear synchroniser. You don’t need to replace the entire gearbox, though. Take it apart and order a new synchroniser from our parts list. It’s then a simple matter to replace the faulty one.

Detached Rear View Mirror
Problem:
The rearview mirror has come off.
Solution:
This is caused by a poorly designed rearview mirror connection, so you’ll need to buy a new rearview mirror altogether. We always keep these in stock, and they are easy to fit yourself.

Noisy Differential
Problem:
The differential is quite noisy while driving.
Solution:
This has led to a recall by Suzuki and is caused by a lack of oil. The incorrect filling procedure may have been followed on your SX4 if it was built between 1 August 2013 and 14 January 2014. This means you are never adding quite enough oil to your car, which could eventually cause the differential to seize. You will need to order a new oil tank from our store and replace the faulty one.

Fuel Tank is Knocking
Problem:
You might hear a banging noise while driving and feel a slight rocking sensation.
Solution:
If your SX4 was manufactured in 2014, it may have a faulty fuel tank support strap. It is very likely to crack and then break. You can have a replacement strap delivered directly to you when you order from us, and it’s very easy to install.
