Toyota Aygo Common Problems and Solutions
Aygo Won’t Start
Problem:
The car refuses to start, especially in very cold weather.
Solution:
The starter motor on a Toyota Aygo tends to wear out much faster than on other cars. Luckily, we always have starter motors in stock, and you can easily replace it yourself.

Exhaust problems
Problem:
If you hear a growling noise coming from the exhaust, this is a common issue with these cars. The exhaust tends to rust very quickly, and the rear silencer can fail.
Solution:
You will need to replace the rear silencer to solve this issue.

Clutch failure
Problem:
The clutch is known for premature wear.
Solution:
Replacing the clutch is the best solution. It is advised to use a 190mm diameter clutch, like the one from the Toyota Yaris, instead of the standard 180mm one. These clutches appear to last longer. You should also inspect the flywheel to ensure it matches the new clutch. The video below shows how to replace the clutch.

Front brake discs corroding
Problem:
It is well known that the Aygo's front brake discs tend to corrode prematurely. The brake discs are also recognised to wear down more rapidly than usual.
Solution:
If this applies to your Aygo, you will need to fit replacement brake discs to fix the issue. We can help you find affordable replacement brake discs.

Water leaks in footwells and boot area
Problem:
The Aygo is susceptible to water leaks in either the front footwells or the boot floor area. This is caused by an issue with the door or hatch seals. If you've noticed wetness in the footwells or on the boot floor, it indicates leaks in the door or hatch seals.
Solution:
Installing new replacement seals will fix the problem.

Airbag warning light
Problem:
You may have noticed that the airbag warning light has come on the dashboard. This is usually caused by a fault with the firing mechanism of one of the front airbags.
Solution:
You will need a diagnostic check to accurately identify whether the fault is with the passenger's or the driver's airbag firing unit. Once determined, fit a replacement firing unit to resolve the problem.

Problem:
The steering wheel isn’t functioning, so you are unable to drive.
Solution:
If your car was built between September and October 2014, then this issue is likely caused by a faulty steering column. While you can purchase a replacement from our store, this can be quite a complex and challenging repair job. There are plenty of online guides that will walk you through the process, so it’s worth having a look.

Fuel Tank Leak
Problem:
You have a leak in your fuel tank.
Solution:
This is quite rare, but it does affect some Aygo owners. The problem is a very small hole in the fuel tank, usually no bigger than a pinhead. Although this is very small, it will grow larger if left untreated. You’ll need to find a replacement fuel tank from our parts list for the Aygo and swap out the faulty one.

Can’t Switch Beams
Problem:
You can’t switch from high to low beams or vice versa.
Solution:
This hasn’t affected all Aygos, but those made in 2020 are especially susceptible to this problem. It is caused by defective headlamp units. You can order this replacement today and have it delivered directly to you. All you need to do is remove the faulty ones and fit the new ones.

Loose Seat Belts
Problem:
The seatbelts on the back seats are frayed and slack.
Solution:
This led to a recall in 2020 and is caused by incorrect stitching on the rear seatbelts. You can find replacement rear seatbelts on our parts list. All you need to do is replace the faulty ones.
