Toyota Supra Common Problems and Solutions
Regular Stalling
Problem:
The car began to stall regularly. This usually occurs after the engine has had time to warm up.
Solution:
This issue is caused by a faulty engine coolant temperature sensor. It’s an easy fix, but it can be a bit fiddly due to its location. However, you can have the new sensor sent directly from the BreakerYard store and save a lot of money with a bit of patience.

Brakes Dragging
Problem:
The brakes are dragging and might overheat.
Solution:
This should only affect your Supra if it has a lot of miles on the clock and the issue is caused by a worn-out brake master cylinder. You will need to replace it, but you’ll find that we always stock these and can deliver your new one directly.

Lack of Power
Problem:
The car has gradually lost power, and its fuel efficiency has deteriorated significantly.
Solution:
The throttle position sensor on the Supra is a common weak point, and it can wear out much sooner than expected. That’s what causes the drop in power. If you ignore this issue, it will only worsen, so find a replacement sensor from our parts list and install it very easily.

High Pressure in Gas Tank
Problem:
The pressure gauge is at the maximum, and the check engine light is on. If you have an emissions test, you will fail it.
Solution:
The Evaporative system is causing problems due to the vapour canister. The canister is probably releasing charcoal pellets, which are blocking the vent valve. You can find a replacement vapour canister, complete with valves, on our parts page for the Supra.

Steering Wheel Shudder When Braking
Problem:
When you press the brakes, the steering wheel judders excessively.
Solution:
Your front rotors have warped. Re-machining them is an option, but it increases the chances of the problem happening again. To prevent this, order factory-quality front rotors from BreakerYard.

Cylinder head gasket failure
Problem:
The cylinder head gasket is known to blow due to incorrect torqueing of the cylinder head bolts. Symptoms of this issue include overheating and white smoke emanating from the exhaust.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement cylinder head gasket to resolve the issue. Ensure the cylinder head bolts are tightened to the correct torque specifications to prevent future problems.

Loosing power/rough running
Problem:
The Supra is notorious for the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve becoming blocked. This issue leads to a loss of power and rough running. Some people have noticed that the problem occurs when the engine is turned off and then restarted within a few minutes.
Solution:
You will need to remove the EGR valve, clean it thoroughly, and refit it to resolve the issue. You can watch the video below to see how this is done.

Heater blower failure
Problem:
A common issue with the Supra is the failure of the heater blower resistor. If you notice that air is not blowing out on certain settings, then this is likely the problem. Each speed has its own coil, which can burn out over time.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement heater blower resistor to fix the issue. This part is located inside the blower duct behind the dashboard.

Headlight problem
Problem:
If you have an imported Supra, headlight discolouration is a common issue. The headlight covers on Japanese-made cars are plastic and can turn yellow over time.
Solution:
You will need to replace the plastic headlight covers with the UK-specified glass covers. We can assist you in finding these at excellent prices.

Squealing Sound When steering
Problem:
When you turn the steering wheel, there is a loud squealing noise. In serious cases, you may be unable to steer the car at all.
Solution:
Certain later models of the Supra have a configuration issue. High stresses lead to vibration fatigue failure in the kink groove area of the steering tie rod. Unfortunately, this isn’t a part that can be repaired, and you will need to order a replacement from our parts list.
