Volkswagen Beetle Common Problems and Solutions
Engine Rattle
Problem:
While driving or idling, you might hear a rattling noise from the engine. This is often accompanied by occasional misfires and difficulty starting the car.
Solution:
You have a loose timing chain. The vibration is caused by that loose chain shaking inside the car. In some cases, you can simply replace the timing chain itself if it has just become stretched. However, you might need to buy a replacement tensioner from our parts list and replace a failed one yourself, which is doable but very fiddly.

Engine Oil Leaks
Problem:
Your Beetle is leaking oil.
Solution:
In most cases, this is caused by a faulty valve cover gasket or a damaged or worn camshaft chain tensioner gasket. These can be fiddly to replace yourself, but it is much more budget-friendly to order the replacement parts from us and carry out the job yourself than to pay a mechanic to do it.

Window Failure
Problem:
The electric windows have ceased moving up or down.
Solution:
This is very common in new Beetles and results from a failed window regulator. Order yours today and have the replacement delivered directly to you. You can then replace the window regulator, which will resolve the issue.

Check Engine Light
Problem:
There are no obvious issues when driving, but the Check Engine light is on.
Solution:
While there are a few possible causes for this, the most probable is an issue with your coolant temperature sensor or your ignition system. Your first step should be to replace the coolant temperature sensor, as this is very affordable when purchased from us and straightforward to install. If that doesn't resolve the Check Engine light, then you'll need to replace the ignition mechanism. Although this is slightly more complex, it's not as difficult as you might think.

Overheating Engine
Problem:
The engine is overheating even on short journeys.
Solution:
It's very likely that this is caused by a damaged water pump impeller. When it fails, it will impact the entire cooling system. You will need to flush the whole system and purchase a replacement water pump and thermostat, which you can order from us for delivery.

Convertible roof problems on New Beetle
Problem:
Many people encounter issues when lowering the roof. When they manually unlock the convertible roof and then press the button, it lowers but fails to lock into place. This problem stems from the micro switches on the piston rams and the flap actuators.
Solution:
To fix this problem, you will need to have someone who understands how it works. The micro switches are not expensive to replace, but labour would be costly if you took it to a dealer.
