Volkswagen Fox Common Problems and Solutions
Rotten Egg Smell
Problem:
There is a strong smell of rotten eggs coming from the exhaust.
Solution:
You should inspect your tailpipe and muffler for leaks, cracks, and holes. If you find any damage, you might be able to seal it with adhesive. If the damage is too serious, you will need to order a replacement from our parts list. Additionally, check your door seals because if carbon monoxide leaks into your car, it could affect your health.

Engine Sputter
Problem:
The engine sputters and spits in all gears and loses power when in 5th gear.
Solution:
There’s a good chance that you have a leak in one of your vacuum lines. This is a very easy part to order from our shop and install yourself. However, it might instead be an issue with your distributor, with potential arcing inside the cap. You will need to browse our parts list for a new one as these can be almost impossible to repair.

Random Power Loss
Problem:
The car keeps losing power. Occasionally, it judders and stalls while driving.
Solution:
This will be a faulty coil pack, which is quite common on the Fox. You’ll find a replacement easily on our parts list, and it’s a fairly straightforward DIY task.

Engine Misfiring
Problem:
The engine keeps misfiring, and the engine management light comes on intermittently.
Solution:
Check your plug, pencil coils, and spark plugs. It’s very likely you'll need to replace one or both of these. Look through our parts list for replacements and install them easily yourself. In rarer cases, engine misfiring on the Fox may be caused by a faulty ignition wire, which can sometimes break down completely. You can also get ignition wires from BreakerYard.

Idling/running problems
Problem:
Have you noticed that the vehicle's performance is very sluggish? Is the engine idling strangely, that is, rising and falling instead of maintaining a steady speed? This seems like a problem with the ignition coil pack.

Water leaking around the door area.
Problem:
If you notice water leaking through the door, it could be due to a few reasons. Check the floor and the head linings above the door to see which interior parts have been affected.
Solution:
The cause of the leak will determine the necessary repair. It might be as simple as re-sealing or re-aligning the doors. Have someone inspect it to identify the issue and then take the appropriate action.

Clutch Squeal
Problem:
When you let go of the clutch, you can hear a loud squealing noise.
Solution:
Don’t panic and assume that this will be an expensive clutch replacement. That squealing sound is caused by a damaged thrust bearing, which is a low-cost part that you can have delivered to you when you order from our store.
