Volkswagen Lupo Common Problems and Solutions
Heater Malfunction
Problem:
Your car heater has stopped working.
Solution:
This will usually be a fault with the module that controls the speed of the heater emission. You won't need to replace the entire heating unit. Look for a heater speed control module on the BreakerYard parts page and order for quick delivery.

Bonnet Won't Open
Problem:
When you apply the bonnet release switch located in the driver's footwell, the bonnet doesn't unlock.
Solution:
The cable that connects the release switch to the boot locking mechanism is a known weak spot for the Lupo, and it's vulnerable to premature wear. The good news is that it's easy to find a new cable on our parts list, and although it's a fiddly job that can take a bit of time, it's a fix that most people are capable of doing themselves.

Rear Washer Stopped
Problem:
Your rear washer has stopped working and no longer sprays water across your rear window.
Solution:
This is a very common problem with the Lupo. It's usually nothing more serious than the pipe disconnecting, in which case all you have to do is pop it back on and secure it with a zip tie or some insulating tape. However, it could also be the washer nozzle itself, which is prone to rapid wear. If it's the nozzle, you'll find a replacement easily in our online store, and it's a 30-second job to screw it into place.

Headlight Failure (All GTI Models)
Problem:
Your xenon headlamps no longer work, making it impossible to drive at night.
Solution:
The first step here is simply to check your bulbs to see if any have blown. If they look fine, then you've got the dreaded component issue that plagued the GTI Lupo. You could take the headlamp apart to try and find exactly which component has failed, but it's a much easier job to order new headlamp units from our parts lists and simply replace the entire headlamp.

Door Clicking
Problem:
One of your doors makes a clicking or groaning sound when it's opening or closing.
Solution:
This is fairly common on the Lupo, and it's down to the door check strap. It's not a big problem, and it doesn't affect car safety, but it's an easy fix. Order a new strap from BreakerYard and easily replace the faulty one.

Window problems
Problem:
You may have noticed that your windows are not winding up or down as they should. If they are going too slow and you are having problems with them, it is most likely caused by a fault with the window regulator.
Solution:
You can try fixing the window regulator, or if this doesn't work you will need to fit a new one. Watch the video below to see how to fix the regulator. The video is for a VW Polo, but is much the same to fix:
Difficulty level
Poor idling or engine cutting out
Problem:
If your Lupo is idling very roughly, coughing and spluttering and could also be cutting out when you are driving, the most likely cause is faulty spark plug leads. This is usually the problem if the engine management warning light isn't on.
Solution:
Even if the garage says the leads are fine, insist that they try new ones, as this usually fixes the problem.

Problem:
If you have noticed that the engine management warning light has switched on your dashboard, it is most likely a problem with one of the sensors. This is the most common cause on the VW Lupo. This is due to a faulty Lambda sensor. This part is responsible for helping control exhaust emissions.
Solution:
You will need to replace the Lambda sensor to resolve the issue.

Headlight condensation
Problem:
This is an issue on quite a few different models. The condensation happens on cold mornings due to the heat generated by the headlight bulbs resulting in the inside of the headlight case getting condensated.
Solution:
You have two choices here as there is no direct fix to the problem. You can either leave it or you can get a couple of very small holes drilled at the bottom of the headlight cover which will allow any water/condensation to run out. This will rectify the problem.

Problem:
It is known on these vehicles for the central locking to fail. This problem is caused by a faulty actuator.
Solution:
You will need to fit a new actuator to resolve the issue.
