Suspension knocking noise
Problem:
The wishbone bushes are prone to failure on the Volvo 440. When you drive over rough surfaces or speed bumps and hear a knocking noise, this is an indication of the wishbone bushes failing.

Lack of power
Problem:
The turbo hose can deteriorate over time, causing a lack of power. If you are finding that there is not much acceleration and it really lacks power at high speeds, the problem is caused by an air leak. The hose cracks over time, which lets air into the system.
Solution:
You will need to replace the turbo hose to sort this problem.
Difficulty level
Water leaking into boot
Problem:
If you are finding that there is water leaking into the boot, it is caused by the boot seal failing. Common symptoms of this failure are wet patches, damp carpets and/or a smell of dampness in the boot area.
Solution:
You will need to replace the boot seal to stop the water leak. If the carpets are wet, you will need to dry them out to stop dampness setting in, if it has not already set in.
Difficulty level
Handbrake failure
Problem:
The handbrake cable is known to fail on the 440. If you are finding that the handbrake is unable to hold the weight of the car on a slope, then the handbrake cable will need to be replaced. Water can sometimes leak into this area and cause the handbrake cable to crack.
Solution:
