Volvo XC60 Common Problems and Solutions
SatNav Loading Issue
Problem:
When you turn on the Satnav, you receive a warning message about the camera loading.
Solution:
This issue is becoming more common in later models of the XC60. It is caused by a faulty mass movement sensor within the alarm system. You can find a new sensor on our parts page for the XC60, but this may be a recurring problem until Volvo releases a revised sensor.

Poor Engine Performance
Problem:
The XC60's performance levels have significantly decreased, and you're using more fuel than before. The engine temperature is rising rapidly, and there has been an increase in black smoke emanating from your exhaust.
Solution:
This could be an issue with your diesel particulate filter (DPF). It might be clogged, which is often caused by frequent short trips without longer drives. Try taking a long drive to potentially clear the system. If that doesn’t work, check the DPF sensor, as it could be worn out. You can order a new sensor from our parts list. If the sensor appears to be in good condition, you will likely need to replace the entire DPF unit.

Loose Seat Belt Anchor Cable
Problem:
The plate that holds the seat belt in place has a cable that feels very slack. It might have completely broken.
Solution:
The seat belt cable is highly susceptible to wear and will need replacing. Check our parts list for the newly designed seat belt fastener. This is a relatively simple DIY task.
Difficulty level
Power Steering Failure
Problem:
The power steering intermittently fails, making turns much more difficult.
Solution:
It’s likely that the joint between the power steering high-pressure line and the steering gear has been assembled incorrectly. This can cause fluid leaks, leading to a loss of power steering. In most cases, you will be able to reassemble the high-pressure line and the steering gear, but this can be a challenging job to do yourself. If your steering gear or the lines have been damaged, you can order replacements directly from BreakerYard for fast delivery.
Difficulty level
Fuel Leaks
Problem:
You are consuming more fuel than before, and there are puddles of fuel on the road where you park.
Solution:
The fuel rail located between the car's components may be improperly attached. This can cause excessive wear on the fuel lines, resulting in cracks and holes. You will need to order replacement fuel lines if they are too worn, and reattach the fuel rail more securely.
Difficulty level
AC Failing
Problem:
The AC is getting weaker and warmer.
Solution:
This is being caused by a software malfunction on your engine fan control module. If you ignore this issue, then it can eventually lead to complete engine failure. Take the car to a Volvo dealer for a software update.
Difficulty level
Automatic boot switch failure
Problem:
The automatic boot switch is prone to failure on the XC60. This button is located on the boot next to the handle, and when pressed, it should open the boot automatically. A problem with the micro switch is what causes the failure.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement micro switch to sort the issue.
Difficulty level
Loss of power/engine management warning light
Problem:
A combination of a loss of power and the engine management warning light appearing on the dashboard is usually an indication of a faulty exhaust heat sensor. The faulty sensor makes the ECU think the exhaust is at a dangerously high temperature, resulting in the ECU putting the vehicle into limp mode. Does the video below look anything like your problem?
Solution:
Fitting a replacement exhaust heat sensor will resolve the issue. We can help you find a replacement exhaust heat sensor at a very low price.

Parking sensor problems
Problem:
There are some known issues with the parking sensors on the XC60. It has been known for them to be over sensitive and they can go off when vehicles pass your vehicle, or when you use the headlight washers.
Solution:
The first thing to try is to move the number plate slightly, as the sensors can get confused by its current location. If this does not work, you will need to upgrade the system.

Erratic Windscreen Wiper
Problem:
The front windscreen wiper is lifting away from the glass and moving erratically.
Solution:
This will be a simple case of the wiper arm securing nuts not being tightened enough. Get your tools out and tighten them, and the problem will be resolved.
Difficulty level
Stiff Or Non-Moving Tailgate
Problem:
The tailgate feels very stiff and hard to lift. In some cases, you won’t be able to move the tailgate at all.
Solution:
Unfortunately, this affected a lot of XC60s built between 2017 and 2018, but it’s quite a minor fix. The problem is that the tailgate lifting arms can freeze up when the weather is cold. That means you’ll need to find new lifting arms on our parts list and replace the faulty ones.
