This is a general guide on how to change an electric aerial for most vehicles.

Estimated time: approx 20 mins              Difficulty: Easy

Manpower: 2 persons

Step 1

Begin by loosening the mast retaining nut with an adjustable spanner or similar tool. Remove the old mast but be careful of sharp edges if it’s a broken mast you are dealing with! You may also want to cover the paint work around the outside connection to protect it should the spanner slip off.

Step 2

When removing the old mast take note of the direction of the teeth. Turn the radio on inside the vehicle, this will eject the mast.

Step 3

Gently pry the lower section of the aerial from the vehicle. Remove the retaining nut from the broken section and place the nut on the new aerial.

Fitting a new electric aerial

Gently feed the cable into the hole and get an assistant at this point. Get the assistant to turn off the radio while you feed in the cable, being careful to remember to have the teeth facing the correct way. You may need to have your assistant turn the radio on and off a few times before the cable teeth bite onto the motor.

Step 1

When the teeth bite onto the motor, continue feeding in the cable and the mast housing into the body of the car. Tighten the nut by hand and test the new aerial. Get your assistant to turn the radio on and off to test the aerial is working, watch it go up and down.

Step 2

Now tighten the nut with the spanner and the electric aerial installation is complete.

If it is not just the aerial that is broken but also the motor then you will need to replace the full unit.
