Volvo XC90 Overview

The Volvo XC90 is classed as a mid-sized luxury crossover SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) which is produced by the Swedish automobile manufacturers Volvo Cars. This vehicle has been in production since 2002 and is based on the Volvo S80 platform. This was Volvos best selling vehicle worldwide in 2005. These vehicles are extremely comfortable and can seat up to seven people. They are very well priced and hold their value well. They are very expensive to run and are not very well refined. It might not be as good as some rivals to drive but they do have the great safety features associated with Volvo vehicles. Does this sound like your experience of the Volvo XC90?

Volvo XC90 History

The Volvo XC90 (2002-2013) was the first SUV to be produced by Volvo and is produced on the Volvo P2 platform. It has a good selection of engines and has the great Volvo safety features now known with Volvo vehicles. There were some reliability issues with the T6 versions. There were reported gearbox failures. The 2005 V8 had some counterbalance problems. In 2007 the XC90 had a makeover, which mainly affected the front and rear end designs. There were some alterations to the interior design as well. There are announced plans to release the second generation XC90 in 2013.

Fuel Economy

The Volvo XC90 has the following engines available: 2.5, 2.9, 3.2 and 4.4L petrol and a 2.4L diesel engine. The 2.4L diesel engine is the more economical of the available engines, offering up to 34mpg which is not that great, but again not to bad for a vehicle of this type. Which engine do you have and how does it perform in terms of fuel economy? The age, fuel type and engine size will be determining factors when it comes to fuel economy.

The Volvo XC90 is available as 5-speed manual or 4, 5 and 6 speed automatic gearboxes. Which gearbox do you have and how do you rate its performance? You can have a look for your XC90 gearbox parts at our Volvo gearbox section.
