Renault Espace Overview
The Renault Espace is a large MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) produced by the French automobile manufacturing company Renault. The first few versions of this vehicle were actually built by Matra, the French manufacturing company, with the latest version being all Renault produced. Another name for this vehicle is the well known name, people carrier. This vehicle is a rather expensive version of people carrier with the third row of seats not having much leg room. On the plus side, this is a very comfortable ride, is known for its safety features and looks pretty stylish.
Renault Espace History
The design for the Renault Espace was originally passed around a bit as no-one wanted to take the risk designing this type of vehicle. The Espace was the first ‘people carrier’ to come onto the market, and set a trend there after. Once other companies seen the popularity of these vehicles they soon followed suit. The Espace 1 (1984-91) was manufactured by Mantra, who got the design from PSA Peugeot Citroen, who in turn got it from Simca. Sales where slow at first but they soon took off and became really popular. It had a makeover in 88, using more Renault parts in place of Talbot parts.
The Espace II (1991-97) reverted back to the original sort of design although it kept the Renault parts, as well as improving on the earlier versions.
The Espace III (1997-2003) really changed the interior design of this vehicle, going for a futuristic design, while the interior style was remodelled slightly. The long wheel base was introduced for this generation and was named the Grand Espace. This was the final version to be manufactured by Mantra.
The Espace IV (2003 - present) was the first full Renault manufactured Espace. This vehicle is made of 90% recyclable and lighter materials, making it more efficient. There were makeovers in 2006, 2012 and 2012 which altered body parts and new engines became available. The phase IV version is the current model in production.
The available range of engines for this vehicle is: 2.0 and 3.5 V6 petrol and 1.9, 2.0, 2.2 and 3.0 diesel engines. The smaller sized diesel engines offer the best fuel economy at around 40 mpg average. When thinking economy always remember to consider the age, fuel type and engine size of the vehicle.
There are three different gearboxes available for the Renault Espace. These are: 6 speed manual and 5 and 6 speed automatic. There is a Renault gearbox section of the Breakeryard website where you can find your gearbox parts for this vehicle.
