Ford Probe Overview

The Ford Probe is a sports coupe produced by the American automobile company, Ford Motor Company. This vehicle was in production from 1989-97 and was first made to replace the Ford EXP in North America and was thought to take over from the discontinued Ford Cortina in Europe. The design structure was influenced and taken from the Mazda G-series and was eventually discontinued due the fact that it was the least selling Ford car of 1997.

Ford Probe History

The first generation of the Ford Probe (1989-92) was a hatchback design which came in 2 engine sizes: 2.2 and 3.0 and these engines were the Mazda F2 and Vulcan V6 respectively. It came in three trims: GL, LX and GT. Depending on the trim would determine the accessories you got with the car. The GL was the standard version and the GT being the luxury version. The second generation (1993-97) was the final version of the Probe to be produced. Both Ford and Mazda combined to produce this second edition Probe. The engine, chassis and transmission were designed by Mazda and Ford designed the body and interior. It was slightly larger than its predecessor but was deemed to be one of the best vehicles to drive in its class. This new version came in both 2.0 and 2.5L engines. This vehicle was then discontinued in 97 due to lack of sales.

Fuel Economy

Depending on the year of the vehicle would determine the available engine size. There were 2.0, 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0L versions in both petrol and diesel. Due to the sporty nature of this vehicle and the large engine sizes it is not the most economical of vehicles. This car was not designed with economy in mind but rather as a sports car.

Transmission

There was a four speed automatic and 5 speed manual gearboxes available for this vehicle. Breakeryard has many Ford Gearbox parts available, check out the associated section today.
