The squib is the component within the airbag inflator that begins the deployment process. Airbag systems utilised in vehicles typically utilise a resistor known as an airbag squib resistor, as a trigger resistor to enable the airbag to be inflated when specified conditions are met. To ensure timely inflation of the airbag it is helpful to periodically monitor the resistance of the airbag squib resistor during operation of the vehicle. Determining whether the resistance of the airbag squib resistor is within acceptable levels while the vehicle is in operation requires the airbag squib resistor to be tested in a manner which does not cause inflation of the airbag. The testing is further complicated by variations in the supply of voltage and electrical noise while the vehicle is in operation and also by process variations which may occur in the manufacture of circuitry of the airbag. If the squib is generating a DTC error code you must replace the airbag in question.
