The xenon HID ballast is essential for the operation of xenon HID bulbs. Xenon HID bulbs do not have a filament like ordinary bulbs. Instead, they contain xenon gas which is ignited by the xenon HID ballast at a voltage of 20,000 volts. The xenon HID ballast works as a power transformer and ensures that the xenon gas molecules remain agitated and the bulbs are maintained by a steady current of 85 volts to keep them ignited.

Without the xenon HID ballast the xenon bulbs would be unable to operate as current voltage to the lighting system of a vehicle is only 12 volts.

Should you experience a xenon HID ballast failure, your headlights will fail to light. Driving without lit headlights in low light is extremely dangerous and can also be a criminal office. Vehicles that do not have a working pair of headlights will fail MOT standards. It’s essential that a xenon HID ballast is repaired or replaced as soon as possible in the event of failure. All xenon HID bulbs also need to pass the relevant health and safety standards and carry the E mark.
