Audi A4 B5 (1994 - 2001)

The first Audi A4 debuted in October 1994, with sales commencing in Europe during 1995. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 platform, similar to the Volkswagen Passat. The A4 featured a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive, although many variations were available with Audi''s quattro four-wheel drive system. Initially the A4 was available as a four-door saloon, with the Avant estate model introduced in 1995.

For European markets there was a range of internal combustion engines available, including 1.6 and 2.8 litre petrol engines and a 1.9 litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group''s VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS or 110 PS. Audi also used the B5 platform to showcase their new tiptronic automatic transmission, based on the Porsche unit developed for the 964-generation 911.

The A4 was facelifted ready to be shown at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, with a 2.8 litre 30-valve V6 engine replacing the 2.8 litre 12-valve and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox. In the Euro NCAP safety and crash tests the first Audi A4 received three stars for front- and side-impact protection, but the tests indicated that the driver may be at risk of chest injury through the side impact.

Audi A4 B6 (2000 - 2006)

The second gen A4 debuted in 2000, using the Volkswagen Group B6 platform. The car was styled by Peter Schreyer, and was very well received. The 1.6 litre base model powerplant stayed the same as its predecessor, but most other petrol engines received power upgrades.

This generation of the A4 used default 50:50 front to rear dynamic torque distribution. Standard features changed to include a Bosch ESP 5.7 Electronic Stability Programme system, with Anti-lock Braking System, brake assist, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution across the range.

2003 saw the reintroduction of the S4, now powered by a 344 PS 4.2 L V8 engine, as well as the launch of the A4 Cabriolet convertible to replace the Audi Cabriolet. The A4 cabriolet featured an electro-hydraulic operated roof, which lowered in less than 30 seconds. It also included some styling changes which later made their way on to the saloon range, such as body-coloured lower bumper and sill panels.

Audi A4 B7 (2004 - 2008)

Late 2004 saw the introduction of the new A4, also known as the B7. This used the same Volkswagen B6 platform as the previous model.

One of the major aesthetic changes included the front grille changing to a tall trapezoidal shape, similar to the third gen Audi A6. The engine lineup received many new options, including the 2005 introduction of Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) on the 2.0 TFSI and 3.2 V6 FSI petrol engines. These engines are both four-valve per cylinder configuration. Audi also retired its 5-speed manual transmissions for this generation in favour of a new Getrag 6-speed, although a conventional ZF 6HP 6-speed tiptronic automatic transmission was still an option on the A4 quattro drive models.

Audi A4 B8 (2008 - present)

The fourth gen A4 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007, with the Avant estate variant shown at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. The Mk4 A4 is built on a variant of the Audi Modular Longitudinal Platform, also used for the Audi A5 coupé. The MLP allows for a reduced front overhang on this version of the A4, resulting in a greater wheelbase length without an increase in overall length. This redistributes the centre of gravity rearwards, improving handling by balancing the mass of a vehicle between the front and rear axles.

The Mk4 A4 featured a wheelbase which was increased by 160 millimetres, with a 117 millimetres increase over the previous generation to allow for increased rear legroom. Audi was praised for this A4''s increased size, giving it best-in-class rear legroom and boot space in the compact executive car segment.

All petrol engines on the fourth gen use Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI), and all diesel engines use the common rail fuel delivery with piezo injectors for the TDI engines. The newest gen A4 received a 5-star safety rating during Euro NCAP testing
