History of BMW 7 Series
The BMW 7 Series is a line of full size luxury vehicles that have been in production since 1977. These models are available in saloon and extended length limousine variants. So far there have been five generations of the 7 Series. What Car? says buyers are offered smooth, potent and impressively efficient engines. The magazine also states that cabin quality is ''hard to fault''. Warranty Direct ranks the BMW 7 Series fourth out of six luxury vehicles in terms of reliability with a score of 365. In first place, Lexus'' LS430 received a score of 112. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class scored 405, in last place. This score is based on a number of factors related to reliability, such as the number of time a car fails, the cost of repair and average time spent off road due to repairs being done. Overall, the 7 Series is known to offer reliable vehicles.
First generation BMW 7 Series (E23) (1977 - 1986)
BMW released the E23 7 Series car in 1977, replacing the large saloon known as the E3. Other than the 745i, all E23 models were built with the 12 valve M30 six cylinder engine, which was used in older E3 and E9 cars. Most E23 engines were fuel injected. Two models, however, were made available with a Solex four barrel carburetor until 1979. In this year, they were replaced by the fuel injected 728i. These E23 models were the first BMWs fitted with service interval indicators, and were very upscale and sophisticated for their time.
Second generation BMW 7 Series (E32) (1986 - 1994)
The E32 7 Series was introduced in 1986, offering buyers a number of luxury options, such as an integrated telephone and fax machines. It was also offered with a wine cooler, traction control system and double glazing. It even had a system that automatically increased spring pressure on the windscreen wipers. It was available with two six-cylinder petrol engines: a V8 and a V12. Production for the BMW 7 Series E32 ceased in 1994.
Third generation BMW 7 Series (E38) (1994 - 2001)
The E38 7 Series was introduced in 1994. It was the first of the series to be made available with a diesel engine, and also the first to have the option of a five-speed automatic transmission. In fact, this was a big year for BMW. They became the first European car manufacturer to offer an integrated satellite navigation screen.
Fourth generation BMW 7 Series (E65/E66/E67/E68) (2001 - 2008)
The Mk4 BMW 7 Series began production in 2001. The E65 was the designation of the standard wheelbase version, the E66 was the long wheelbase version, the E67 was the high security version and the E68 was the Hydrogen 7 version, which was the first production BMW to be powered by hydrogen. A number of powerful engines were offered over the years of production, including a 6.0 litre V12 petrol engine and a V8 turbo diesel.
Fifth generation BMW 7 Series (F01/F02) (2008 - 2015)
The fifth generation BMW 7 Series was released in November 2008, made available with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all wheel drive. It became the first of the series to have all turbocharged engines. The front suspension is a double wishbone design, rather than the MacPherson struts used on previous BMW 7 Series models.
