The Chrysler Voyager has had a pretty successful life on both sides of the pond, although it has suffered some serious knocks when it comes to its overall safety rating. Reviewers have praised the impressive amount of interior space, as well as its classy overall image and relatively decent resale values on older models.

First and second generation Chrysler Voyager (1988 - 1995)

The first generation Chrysler Voyager was first launched in Europe in 1988, which involved Dodge Caravans being rebranded as Chryslers. This Mk1 Voyager model was almost identical to its American counterpart, aside from some external differences including the head and tail lights and a different grille. Another difference was with regards to the engines, with the European markets not receiving the V6 power option. 

The second gen Voyager then launched in 1991, as further rebadged Dodge Caravans. With this model the Caravan was sold alongside the Voyager in the USA. European countries once again received a model that was similar to the Plymouth Voyager, aside from the 3.8L V6. In some markets this Mk2 model was the last generation to have a manual transmission. 

Third and fourth generation Chrysler Voyager (1996 - 2007)

Once again with the third generation Chrysler Voyager was identical to the American Plymouth model. With this model in the US the Voyager was not sold in some states due to trouble meeting the now stricter emissions regulations. In 1996 Euro NCAP crash test results showed that the Chrysler Voyager did not perform well, with such bad front impact scores that it earned no points - making it the worst model in its group with regards to safety.

The fourth generation model, from 2001 to 2007, was only offered in a short wheelbase form, replacing the SWB Plymouth Voyager. This design bore a close resemblance to the Town and Country, far more than its predecessors. The main cosmetic difference between the Town and Country and the Voyager was the presence of the Chrysler badge on the grille. From 2003 in the USA the Voyager was discontinued. European models from around 2001 were offered with a new range of engines, including options which were larger yet more economical. These included a 2.5 L and a 2.8 L four-cylinder diesel, as well as more efficient four-cylinder petrol options.

Fortunately for owners the 2006 model Chrysler Voyager fared slightly better during Euro NCAP safety testing than its predecessor, although it still only achieved a two out of five score. Statistics from Folksam, a Swedish insurance company, in 2009 showed that the Voyager was actually better than many thought, with the 96-00 generation model getting a ''Safest'' rating during their report, meaning it was at least 30% safer than the average vehicle.

Fifth generation Chrysler Voyager (2008 - present)

The most recent version of the Chrysler Voyager was launched in 2008, designed to sit as a luxury MPV. Again this model featured many visual similarities to the Chrysler Town and Country model, which was sold in both the North and South American markets. For European customers this latest Voyager was sold with a standard diesel engine: a 2.8 L CRD l4.

In a slightly more unusual move the seating in the Voyager followed a typically North American format, with 2-2-3 seating rather than the 2-3-2 popular in European SUVs and MPVs. The gear shift lever sits on a floor-mounted console between the seats on RHD models, rather than being in the instrument panel on the LHD vehicles.

From 2011 Voyager models sold in continental Europe are to be sold under the Lancia marque, with this model designed to supersede the Lancia Phedra within the Lancia range. This Lancia Voyager model was awarded a four star safety rating when tested by Euro NCAP, an improvement on all previous results. The Voyager was still sold under the Chrysler brand name in the United Kingdom.
