History of Citroen Berlingo Multispace

The family-friendly Citroen Berlingo Multispace is a practical MPV that''s been produced by the French manufacturer since 1996. The Berlingo Multispace is almost identical to the Peugeot Partner Tepee as the two cars have been built as part of the PSA Peugeot Citroen alliance. The MPV offers loads of room for both passengers and luggage. Three adults can sit comfortably in the back and access is easy via the sliding doors. The cavernous boot space is capable of holding up to 3,000 litres of luggage with the rear seats removed. Produced since 1996 by PSA Peugeot Citroen, the Berlingo Multispace is not the most stylish of MPVs but it''s extremely practical and a favourite with families looking for a spacious car that won''t break the bank. There have been two generations of the Citroen Berlingo Multispace to date.

Citroen Berlingo Multispace I (1996 - 2007)

The original Citroen Berlingo Multispace was essentially the Berlingo van with windows and rear seats. However, what it lacks in style and finesse the Multispace makes up for in practicality. What Car? says: "Get past the van-like looks and you''ll find a capable people carrier that will keep your motoring costs down."

The Berlingo Multispace I was actually the first ever car to be reviewed on BBC Top Gear on the new revamped show back in 2002, which is the year the Multispace was revised and given a new redesigned interior and front end. A further facelift was given to the MPV in 2004. 

Although poorly equipped, the Berlingo Multispace was a popular car with a range of diesel and petrol engines on offer.

Citroen Berlingo Multispace II (2008 - 2015)

Styled by Gilles Vidal, the second generation Multispace is no longer based on a van. Instead it''s based on PSA''s Platform 2, which is the platform used for the Citroen C4. With a more car-like drive and feel inside, the Berlingo Multispace II is also slightly larger than its predecessor and quite a bit more expensive. In terms of engines, both petrols and diesels were available at launch, and with the major update in 2015 five efficient diesel engines make up the range. The pre-2015 model still has many items restricted to the options list, but the new Berlingo Multispace has more safety features and more equipment included as standard. This brings the French MPV into line with other cars of a similar size, such as a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
