Citroen Berlingo Common Problems and Solutions
Creaking Noise from Engine (1.6-ltr Diesels)
Problem:
You can hear a loud creaking noise when the engine is running.
Solution:
Your cambelt rollers are either very worn or have completely gone. This doesn’t happen too often on the Berlingo Multispace, but they will need to be replaced. You can find new cam belt rollers on our parts menu.

Chuffing Sound from The Engine (1.6-ltr Diesels)
Problem:
You can hear a chuffing noise coming from the engine, which sounds a little bit like a steam engine.
Solution:
You have very likely got an injector failure inside the engine. Your only solution is to buy new injectors and replace them, which we can deliver to you when you buy from BreakerYard.

Knocking Sound
Problem:
You can hear a knocking sound while driving. The car will also sit very low.
Solution:
It’s not too common, but this will be caused by broken coil springs. While it’s a little bit tricky to replace these yourself, you can find them at very low prices in our store, and you can save yourself a lot of cash by doing the replacement yourself.

Instrument Lights Have All Illuminated
Problem:
Every light on the instrument panel is lit up, and the car may even fail to start.
Solution:
Water has managed to get into your fuse box. You may be able to get away with simply replacing the fuses, which you can order from us quickly as we always have them in stock. In more serious cases, you’ll need to replace the whole fuse box.

Water Inside the Car
Problem:
Water is getting into the cabin and the footwell, causing damage and a musty smell.
Solution:
Check the roof-mounted aerial, as this is often not sealed correctly and is allowing water to get into the car. You can solve this by just using plastic adhesive, but if the water has damaged the aerial, then you’ll need to order a replacement from us and install the new one. You should also check the passenger door seal, as this is a frequent issue when it comes to water damage. You can order a new passenger door seal from our store and easily replace it.

Steering Wheel Isn’t Straight
Problem:
The car drives fine, but the steering wheel isn’t positioned correctly.
Solution:
This is a common fault on the Berlingo Multispace, but it’s an easy solution. Loosen the holding bolts, reposition the steering wheel and then retighten. However, a misaligned steering wheel can lead to unevenly worn tyres, so you may need to order replacements from our parts list.
Difficulty level
Weak Brakes
Problem:
You are having to exert more pressure on the brake pedal to get the car to stop.
Solution:
It’s very likely that some material has detached from the timing belt and is negatively affecting the brake vacuum pump. Later models have software detection that will identify this issue before it becomes a problem. You’ll have to replace both the vacuum pump and the timing belt, both of which we have in stock at all times. You should also update your detection software, which any Citroen dealer should be able to do for you.
