Fiat Uno Common Problems and Solutions

Idling problem

Problem:

A common issue with the Fiat Uno is the engine cutting out while idling, and it can sometimes be difficult to restart afterwards. The usual cause of this problem is a faulty coolant sensor.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to replace the coolant sensor if that is the issue. It could also be linked to the distributor, which usually indicates a leak in the vacuum advance pipe (see the starting problem above).

Braking problem

Problem:

If you notice that the brakes feel very spongy when you first start the car, you probably have a leak somewhere in the rear brakes. The usual cause is a leak in the wheel cylinder.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to identify exactly where the leak is coming from and, if it is the wheel cylinder, replace this part to fix the issue.

Car overheating

Problem:

It is known that the Fiat Uno's engine can overheat, which may be caused by a broken Cylinder Head gasket or a faulty thermostat.

Models affected:

Solution:

If water is leaking from the overflow or white smoke is coming from the exhaust, it indicates a blown cylinder head gasket. Otherwise, replace the thermostat. The video below shows signs of a blown cylinder head gasket!

Starting problems

Problem:

If you find that the engine on your Uno is starting properly or is cutting out, two main causes are likely. The first is to check the vacuum advance, which can be damaged, causing a leak in the pipe. Another possible cause could be a faulty ECU.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to determine whether it is the vacuum advance or the ECU. If it's the vacuum advance, you'll need to buy a replacement pipe; if it's the ECU, you'll have to replace the ECU.

Scraping Noise From Gearbox

Problem:

The gearbox makes a scraping noise that stops when you press down on the clutch while idling but returns when driving at normal speeds.

Models affected:

Solution:

Firstly, check that there is enough lubrication in the gearbox, and apply more if it is overly dry. If the problem continues, you may have damaged drive shafts, which you can order replacements for from our drop-down parts list.

Excessive Vibrating

Problem:

The car has begun to vibrate significantly while accelerating, often coupled with a sudden loss of power.

Models affected:

Solution:

There are a few steps you can try here. Start by ordering new spark plugs from our online shop and replacing any worn ones. If that doesn’t solve the issue and there are no obvious problems with the wires leading to the spark plugs, then the fault is likely caused by a broken fuel injector. We have plenty of these in stock for the Uno and can deliver a replacement directly to your door.
