History of Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger, otherwise known by its codename T6, is a mid-size pickup truck launched and produced by the motoring giants at Ford Motor Company. It was first unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney during 2010, before production commenced in 2011 at plants in Thailand, South Africa and Argentina. The Ford Ranger has been incredibly popular throughout the world, as shown by its impressive awards wins - including taking the What Car? Pick Up of the Year Award two years running and winning the International Pick-Up Award 2013. The Ford Ranger has been a great success for Ford in the international market, opening the minds of drivers to the world of compact pickups. The Ranger combines the best of off-road capabilities with comfort and style, making it a great choice both on and off road.

Ford Ranger (2011 - present)

The Ranger was initially launched at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney in 2010 as a mid-size pickup truck. Codenamed the T6, the Ranger was destined to replace the older model Ford Ranger that had proved a great success in the North American market, being the best-selling compact pickup in America from 1987 to 2004.

The new Ford Ranger T6 is sold in 180 countries around the world, although initially there were no plans to stock it in the USA or Canada due to the similarities between it and the existing Ford F-150.

The new generation Ranger was the first pickup to achieve a five star safety rating during the rigorous Euro NCAP testing process, achieving some of the highest scores for both overall safety and pedestrian protection. The vehicle was also put to the test by critics around the world, who voted unanimously to announce the Ford Ranger as the winner of the International Pick-Up Awards 2013 - giving it more points than the second and third-placed vehicles combined.

The technology is one thing that helps the Ford Ranger stand out from a crowd. Designed to perform on off-road terrain as well as on urban streets, the car features aspects designed to prioritise driving comfort and help you stay relaxed. These include selectable 4X4 modes, adaptable auto transmission, rear-facing cameras, parking sensors, cruise control and other optional extras.

Engines and transmissions

The Ford Ranger is available in a variety of drive formations, including rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, to compliment a new and improved range of engines designed to deliver more power whilst improving fuel consumption. Three engines available include a 2.5L Duratec (L5-VE) petrol engine, a 2.2L Duratorq TDCi ("PUMA" ZSD-422) diesel engine and a 3.2L Duratorq TDCi ("PUMA" P5AT) diesel engine, all of which are mated with either five- or six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Due to their work to improve economy levels the newest Ranger produces much lower emissions, with the truck now achieving CO2 figures as low as 192g/Km according to Ford, while new six-speed transmissions save fuel and also help to cut emissions.
