History of Ford S-Max

The Ford S-Max is an MPV produced by the Ford Motor Company for the European market, which is still in production to this day. It was originally launched alongside the new gen Ford Galaxy in 2006. As well as an MPV, Ford also describe the S-Max as a sports activity vehicle (SAV), meaning for it to be sporty like a saloon with the spaciousness of an MPV. The S-Max has been very successful, particularly when it comes to reviews and awards. It was named European Car of the Year 2007. The Ford S-Max has been praised for its fun driving style, with What Car? saying it is both more fun to drive than most other MPVs and more refined. The SAV design style makes for a roomy interior with versatile seat formations, although some say that the folding mechanisms are fiddly - particularly on the rearmost two seats.

Ford S-Max (2006 - 2014)

The Ford S-Max was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006, taking inspiration from the larger seven-seat Galaxy and the smaller Ford C-Max. The S-Max was the first vehicle in the updated Ford lineup to use their Kinetic Design aesthetic, which featured angular headlights, larger wheel arches and twin trapezoidal grilles. It also boasted a high level spec, with heated front and back windscreens, aux input, bluetooth connectivity, parking sensors and dual climate control as standard.

Another hugely popular feature of the S-Max is its "Fold Flat System", which Ford has begun to use more regularly. This allows the second and third-row seats to fold completely into the floor, giving a greater level of storage space inside the already spacious cabin.

Three trim levels are offered for the S-Max: the Edge, Zetec and top of the range Titanium. Ford have said that, according to their data, around 60% of all S-Max buyers chose the high end Titanium spec. All S-Max variants use versions of the Ford Duratorq or Ford Duratec engine, with a five-speed or six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic option. In 2008 Ford also added a 2.2 L TDCi common-rail diesel engine to the top level models.

A high performance Ford S-Max model was reviewed on Top Gear against the Vauxhall Zafira and the Mercedes B200, where it was described as the cheapest yet most comfortable, and with the best interior and exterior.

2010 saw a facelift for the S-Max, which included LED rear lights and LED Daytime Running Lights as well as a new fascia. It was awarded a 5-star Best in Class rating during Euro NCAP safety testing, with safety features including the Intelligent Protection System. This combined an optimised body structure with state-of-the art safety restraints and aids designed to help drivers avoid accidents and reduce the likelihood of injuries.

Second generation Ford S-Max (2014 - present)

A second generation S-Max was first introduced at the 2014 Paris Auto Show in September, boasting ultra-contemporary styling and precision handling. The new S-Max is designed to be the perfect mix of flexibility and practicality without compromising on style, with a huge range of technology included.

The exterior styling is relatively similar to its predecessor, with slimmer headlamps and a redesigned nose. Active grille shutters have been included on all models to improve aerodynamics and boost fuel efficiency. A new Mondeo-based underpinning and range of EcoBoost petrol and TDCi engines make the newest S-Max better to drive than ever, with sharp steering and a comfortable ride quality.
