MG ZR Common Problems and Solutions
Brake Pedal Pulsing
Problem:
When you're driving at low speeds, and you apply the brake, you can feel a pulse going through the pedal.
Solution:
This could be a brake sensor fault, which is a fairly simple DIY fix. However, it’s more likely to be a worn-out reluctor ring, which you can find on the outer CV joint. These are extremely low-cost parts to order from our online store, and installation is fairly straightforward.

Whining 5th Gear
Problem:
The gearbox makes a whining sound when you're in 5th gear or when idling.
Solution:
If the whining sound disappears when you press the clutch pedal, then this is a simple case of replacing the input shaft bearings. If the whining is persistent even when the clutch pedal is applied, then you’re going to have to browse our parts list for a new clutch assembly.

Uneven Idling
Problem:
The engine has started to idle unevenly.
Solution:
If you're lucky, this is nothing more than a leaking inlet manifold gasket O-ring. That’s a very cheap part when you order from Breakeryard and very easy to install. However, in rare cases, uneven idling is caused by a faulty ECU, which suddenly becomes a very big replacement job. Some drivers have replaced the O-rings and the ECU, only to find that the problem is being caused by a faulty sensor. That means a full diagnostic check to determine which sensor has failed, although these are also low-cost and easy to install.

Misfiring Engine
Problem:
The engine has started to misfire a lot and may be making some new and unusual noises. The car is harder to start, and the check engine light may be flashing.
Solution:
Your cambelt has worn out. On the K-series, this needs to be changed every 60,000 miles (or four years), and on the L-series, every 84,000 miles (or seven years). You’ll need to find a new cambelt on our parts list, but you should also install a new water pump and tensioner, all of which can be found on the BreakerYard parts page.

Loose Carpet
Problem:
The carpet on the floor of your ZR has come loose.
Solution:
The trim clips that are behind the dash section have most likely broken off, and you will need to fit new ones. This is very common on post-2001 ZRs because of the insulation removal. It’s an easy fix, though, and the trim clips are always available in our online store.

Drifting When Driving
Problem:
The car is drifting to one side when you’re driving. The steering doesn’t feel accurate, and it feels uneven when taking a corner.
Solution:
These are signs that your front suspension is worn out or damaged. The only option here is to replace the entire front suspension system. This is a big job that can be quite intimidating. However, you’ll only need some basic tools, and there are many online guides available to help walk you through the process. You can have complete suspension systems delivered when you order from our parts list.

Overheating Engine (All Petrol Models)
Problem:
The engine is quickly overheating, and there may be thick white smoke coming from the exhaust. There is bubbling in the radiator and coolant reservoir.
Solution:
The head gasket on the ZR is very vulnerable to premature wear, especially if the coolant hasn’t been kept topped up. If you have any of the listed problems, then your head gasket has already gone and will need to be replaced. We always have head gaskets available for easy ordering and quick delivery.

Rear suspension problems
Problem:
Can you hear a banging noise coming from the rear suspension as you drive over speed bumps, or poorly surfaced roads? If so, this is most likely caused by a fault with the rear trailing arm.
Solution:
You will need to replace the rear trailing arm to fix the issue.

Electric window problems
Problem:
If you find that the electric windows on your ZR are sticking, it is caused by an issue with the rubbers not being lubricated enough. Another known issue with the windows on this car, is for the window to fall down and not go back up again. This problem is caused by faulty plastic clips inside the door.
Solution:
For the window sticking issue, you can apply some WD40 to the rubbers, in order to sort the problem. For the issue with the window falling, you will need to replace the plastic clips inside the door.

Gearbox problems
Problem:
Can you hear a whining noise coming from the gear lever when driving? Does this noise go away when you put your foot on the clutch? If the answer is yes to both of these questions, then you have a problem with the gearbox release bearings failing.
Solution:
Fitting replacement release bearings will solve the problem.

Starting problems
Problem:
The coil pack is known for failing on the ZR. If this part fails, it could lead to problems starting and/or issues with the engine misfiring, causing irregular engine idling.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement coil pack to fix the problem. Watch the video below for an idea on how to change a coil pack:

Problem:
