Nissan Micra Common Problems and Solutions
Broken Door Handle
Problem:
One or more of your door handles has become brittle, cracked, or has completely snapped off.
Solution:
Although this affects all Micra models, it is more common in the earlier versions due to the use of a more brittle material. If the door handles are too damaged to function properly, you can order the appropriate handles using our convenient spare part tool.

Illuminated Engine Failure Light
Problem:
The warning light on your dashboard is illuminated, signalling an engine failure.
Solution:
Inspect the camshaft pulley and the timing chain tensioner. If you notice they are worn or damaged, they will need replacing. We sell both, so sourcing the replacement parts shouldn't be an issue.
Difficulty level
Keyless Entry Failure
Problem:
Your keyless entry system isn't working, so you need to use the manual key to access and lock the car.
Solution:
There is a problem with your keyless entry control module. Before buying a replacement from our store, try removing the F17 fuse from the fuse box or relay board. Then, sit back and wait for five minutes before reinserting the fuse. If that does not fix the issue, we will deliver your keyless entry control module directly to your door.

Rear Fog Constantly On
Problem:
The rear fog light stays on.
Solution:
You'll find that it is usually a software problem that any mechanic can fix quickly. However, in some instances, it could be a faulty multifunction control module. If that is the case, we can supply a replacement promptly. You will then need to replace the faulty unit.
Difficulty level
Stalling and Juddering
Problem:
The car starts properly at first but then judders and stalls. It takes a few minutes before it can be restarted.
Solution:
This is probably a straightforward issue with the engine coolant temperature sensor. We can deliver your replacement swiftly, and you should find it easy to remove the faulty sensor and install the new one. Unfortunately, the K11 (1993-2003) and K12 (2003-on) models might have an issue with the throttle body. You should try removing and cleaning it, as this often resolves the problem. If it doesn't, you'll need to order a complete throttle body.
Difficulty level
Clutch Slip (All Manual Models)
Problem:
You notice that the clutch occasionally slips, especially when accelerating.
Solution:
This suggests that your clutch has become worn or damaged. The only solution is to replace the entire clutch system, which we can deliver directly to you. Replacing a clutch system might seem like a task better suited to mechanics, but it's probably much simpler than you think (and definitely more cost-effective) to do yourself.

Loss of Power
Problem:
There are sudden power drops while driving.
Solution:
This is almost always caused by a problem with your mass airflow sensor. You can buy a replacement filter from us, and it is a simple replacement task.

Broken Turbo (Diesels Only)
Problem:
The turbo has stopped working.
Solution:
This is quite common in diesel Micras, which are known for having problematic turbos. You can order a replacement turbo from our store, but it's worth checking the exhaust gas recycling valve first, as this is much quicker and easier to replace than the entire turbo.
Difficulty level
Rough Idling
Problem:
You are experiencing rough idling and an overall decline in engine performance.
Solution:
This is more common on Micras that have been used only for short journeys. It is usually a sign that the car hasn't been receiving regular doses of antifreeze, which means that the head gasket is either about to fail or has already become seriously degraded. You'll need to buy a replacement head gasket from our Micra spare parts list and replace the damaged one.

Car Shaking
Problem:
When you're driving, you can feel the car shaking from side to side. The steering wheel may also shake whenever you accelerate.
Solution:
The CV joints in the wheel have worn out, and you will need to order them from us and replace them as soon as possible. This can be a very costly job and quite challenging to do yourself. However, it is possible to do, and there are plenty of online guides available that can guide you through the process.

Unusual Sound When Braking
Problem:
There is a strange noise you hear each time you press the brake pedal. You might also notice oil leaking from the callipers.
Solution:
Your callipers will have seized, and you'll need to replace them. This process is quite straightforward to do yourself, although it can be a little fiddly. You should order your callipers from our website and then replace the seized ones.

Rattling from windows
Problem:
If you hear a rattling noise coming from the window, then you have an issue with the runner seal.
Solution:
The runner seal inside the door needs adjustment to resolve the issue.
Difficulty level
Power loss
Problem:
If you've noticed a loss of power while driving or a significant lack of power at high speeds, then you probably have an issue with the mass airflow meter.
Solution:
Replacing the mass airflow meter will fix the problem.

Battery problems
Problem:
Early versions of the third-generation Micra were known to have issues with the battery discharging. This problem is caused by a software failure.
Solution:
The VCM programming requires updating to fix this issue. It is covered by warranty, or Nissan might repair it as a goodwill gesture. If not, you will need to pay for the update.
Difficulty level
Starting problems
Problem:
The Micra has had starting problems, whether the engine is cold or warm. This issue stems from the ignition switch overheating, which causes the starter motor to fail. Is the problem shown in the video below similar to yours?
Solution:
You will need to replace the ignition switch to resolve the issue. Nissan might repair this as a goodwill gesture even if the vehicle is not under warranty.

Boot lock problem
Problem:
The Micra is known to have issues with the boot lock. You will notice it's a problem when the boot does not lock properly, and opening and closing become difficult.
Solution:
Check if the vehicle is still covered by warranty; if it is not, you can request a Nissan dealer to repair it free of charge as a goodwill gesture. Otherwise, you will need to cover the repair costs.

Smell of Coolant Inside Car
Problem:
After driving, you notice a smell of coolant.
Solution:
There may be a crack or a hole in your coolant overflow bottle. You will need to order a replacement, wait for it to be delivered, and then remove the broken part. It's a very quick job that shouldn't cause any problems.
Difficulty level
Wipers Won't Stop
Problem:
The windscreen wipers work perfectly until you spray water on them. Then, they won't stop.
Solution:
This issue is common with the 1.2 Auto Micra, but it can occur in most models. The problem is a faulty rainwater sensor. You can order one from us and replace the broken sensor very quickly.

A Droning Noise While driving
Problem:
When you exceed 20mph, you can hear a droning noise coming from the engine.
Solution:
Don't ignore this issue or hope it will resolve itself. It indicates that your wheel bearing is worn, and you should order a replacement from our Micra parts list. Ensure you identify which wheel bearing is worn so you can purchase the correct type.
