Peugeot 306 Common Problems and Solutions
Erratic Windscreen Wipers
Problem:
Your windscreen wipers speed up, slow down, and randomly stop when you're using them in the rain.
Solution:
A very minor flaw, but the wiper motor in the 306 is prone to premature wear. The good news is that this is a very inexpensive part in the BreakerYard store, it’s easy to access, and it should take less than 5-minutes to install.

Grinding Sound From Engine
Problem:
You can hear a grinding sound coming from the front of the car when the engine is running. If you lift the bonnet, you can see that the alternator belt is worn.
Solution:
This is being caused by your alternator belt tensioner pulley bearings. This is a surprisingly easy fix. You can find low-cost bearings in our online store. Then, install them via the inspection hole that’s in the offside front wheel arch. It’s a little fiddly, but it’s an easier job on the 306 than in almost every other car.

AC Failure
Problem:
The aircon has stopped working.
Solution:
The AC on the 306 is one of the most joked about car faults in the UK. It will break in almost every 306 very quickly, thanks to the pipework that runs beneath the front bumper. That means it gets covered in dirt and road salt, and it simply falls apart. You’ll usually have to replace the entire AC system, which you can find on the BreakerYard parts list, and we always have them in stock.

Airbag warning light
Problem:
If the airbag warning light is flashing on the dashboard it is usually due to a faulty wire underneath the seats, although it can mean that there is a problem with the airbag.
Solution:
Replacing the wire should fix the issue. If it doesn’t, you should seek advice from a qualified mechanic who may need to run a diagnostic on your car to ensure that the airbag is fully functional.

Heater problems
Problem:
If you are having pf you are having problems with the heater not blowing out any hot air then you most likely have a burst heater matrix. Check the carpets in the front foot wells for dampness, as this is also an indication of a leak within the heater matrix.
Solution:
The best option is to fit a replacement heater matrix. The heater matrix acts as a heat exchanger. When the fan blows through the heated water, the hot air is blown into the interior of the car making sure you’re nice and toasty. Search for your Peugeot 306 heater matrix through Breakeryard.com.

Brake warning light
Problem:
If the brake warning light has come on the dashboard, you have got one of two issues; it could either be a problem with the front brake hose, or a problem with one of the sensors.
Solution:
Once you have identified exactly what the cause is you will either need to replace the hose or the sensor. You may need to have a diagnostic carried out on your car at a garage to find out which is the required solution. You can locate braking system parts with Breakeryard.com.

Erratic idling
Problem:
When you turn on the engine and leave it to idle in neutral gear, do you find it very erratic (going up and down), instead of remaining constant? If so, this means you have a problem with the idle control valve. Is the idling on the video below similar to your problem?
Solution:
Fitting a replacement idle control valve will sort this out. Search for a replacement idle control valve now using the Find a Part tool on the right.

Stiff clutch
Problem:
A stiff clutch is a problem on the diesel versions of the 306, which means that some people find it very difficult to drive. The clutch allows the driver to change gear by disengaging from the drive shaft when the clutch pedal is depressed. A stiff clutch pedal can be a sign that the clutch is on its way out.
Solution:
Although the clutch still works, fitting a replacement clutch will fix the problem. However, replacing a new clutch can be expensive, but you can save money if you buy a quality used one with us. Find a clutch for your Peugeot 306.

Coil pack failure
Problem:
If you are having coil pack failure then there could be a number of symptoms including: engine misfiring, poor starting or lack of power. If you are facing any of these issues then the most likely cause is the coil pack. The ignition coil is similar to a transformer and converts low voltage power from the car’s battery into the high voltage power required to start the engine.
Solution:
You will need to replace the ignition coil in order to resolve the issue. Find an ignition coil for your 306.
