Renault Clio Common Problems and Solutions
Startup Error
Problem:
You receive a startup error warning when turning the ignition key.
Solution:
This is usually caused by water entering the fuse box or the relay plate in the engine, leading to corrosion. You will need to replace any damaged parts, and it is also advisable to add a protective plate to the fuse box, which you can obtain from us. Sometimes, the issue could also stem from the crankshaft position sensor, which you might notice through the occasional engine shutdown. In such cases, replacing the crankshaft position sensor will be necessary.

Bumpy Driving
Problem:
The Clio is not travelling smoothly, particularly noticeable when driving over rough surfaces.
Solution:
There’s a good chance you have a fault with either your right or left suspension. Get underneath the car and inspect both for any cracks or fissures. In most cases, you'll need to replace your suspension, which you can purchase from us here.

Weak Accelerator
Problem:
The car isn’t as responsive as it used to be and requires more pressure on the accelerator.
Solution:
This is usually a faulty contact on the sensor. All you need to do is check the sensor connection and replace it with one of ours if it is faulty.

Engine Rattles When Driving
Problem:
The engine rattles when you drive, runs poorly, and occasionally misfires.
Solution:
This will be your timing belt. The expected lifespan of the timing belt on a Clio 1.2 petrol and 1.5 diesel is approximately five years. It will need to be replaced with one of our options to address the engine issues. If you do this yourself, you will need a crankshaft locking pin and a camshaft alignment ruler, which can be purchased from us. If you do not have those tools available, it is advisable to visit a mechanic.

Sunroof leaking and rattling
Problem:
This particular issue is very common in these cars, and a rattling sound from the sunroof occurs when driving, accompanied by a leak through the sunroof. This problem also causes water damage around the leaking area.
Solution:
There is no immediate fix for the sunroof rattling, but you can prevent the leak by applying silicone filler to the affected area, or if you prefer, replace the seal to stop the leak.

Idling problems
Problem:
A common issue with these cars is that when your vehicle is idling, it may cough and splutter due to a problem with the ECU.
Solution:
This problem can be resolved by taking the car to a local Renault dealer and having them reprogram the ECU. This is usually done free of charge by the dealer, but check with them first. This should fix your idling issue.

Faulty Ignition Coil
Problem:
You may have noticed that your car has started to splutter along and sometimes even cut out. One of the main causes of this problem is a faulty ignition coil. A faulty ignition coil is a common problem on these cars.
Solution:
The only way to fix this problem is fitting a new ignition coil. You will need to check exactly which one is faulty, and once identified, replace the faulty coil. Check out the video below to see how to change an engine coil.

ABS sensor problems
Problem:
It is common for the Renault Clio to experience issues with the ABS system. If you notice the ABS warning light come on your dashboard, it is likely due to a problem with one of the ABS sensors. You may also feel pulsations in the brake pedal when you press on it.
Solution:
To resolve this issue, you will need to have a diagnostic check carried out, which will help identify the faulty sensor. Once you've identified the defective sensor, you will need to replace it to resolve the problem.

Unresponsive Braking
Problem:
The Clio takes longer to stop completely no matter how hard you press the brake pedal. Sometimes, you notice oil on the ground if you’ve been parked for a while.
Solution:
This is a common issue with all Clios up to those made after 2015. The problem is poorly fitted protectors on the brake hose. This leads to worn hoses that must be replaced. It is such a widespread problem that the Clio has had to be recalled twice because of it. Luckily, it’s a quick fix and a fairly straightforward replacement that you can do yourself, provided you have the parts from us.

Problem:
The power steering isn’t functioning properly, and the warning light is on.
Solution:
This caused a recall of all Clios produced in the second half of 2019, which will necessitate a complete replacement of the steering column. If your Clio is still under warranty, a Renault dealer will usually handle this free of charge. However, you may also do this yourself if you prefer, after purchasing a steering column from us.
