Skoda Superb Common Problems and Solutions
Creaking Tailgate
Problem:
The tailgate squeaks when opened or closed and feels stiff.
Solution:
This is one of the most common complaints about the Superb. The problem is that the tailgate hinges need to be regularly lubricated, and if you don't do this, movement quickly becomes restricted. If you don't start lubricating the hinge, you'll eventually need to find a new set on our parts page for the Superb.

Rusting Alloys
Problem:
Your alloys are beginning to rust significantly and might even be falling apart.
Solution:
Unfortunately, premature wear on Superb alloys is all too common, and there is no easy fix. You'll need to find new alloys in the BreakerYard store and fit your replacements.

Jerking Gear Changes (All DSG Models)
Problem:
The car occasionally jerks when you change gear, and you have to struggle to shift between 1st and 2nd gear.
Solution:
If you have a DSG gearbox, then you should know that it's one of the worst parts of the Skoda Superb. You can try getting a software update from a Skoda dealer, but this doesn't always resolve the issue. You may need to find a new gearbox from our parts list and replace the DSG gearbox entirely.

Water leak in passenger front footwell
Problem:
The plenum chamber and drainage holes can become blocked with leaves and debris, causing water to leak into the front passenger footwell. These components are situated beneath the front windscreen.
Solution:
Unblocking the plenum chamber and drainage holes will solve the problem. You might need to dry the passenger side carpet to prevent any dampness. Watch the video below for an idea of how to access the plenum chamber.

Ball joint failure
Problem:
The front suspension ball joints can fail on this vehicle. When you drive over speed bumps or roads with poor surfaces and hear a knocking noise, this is usually the cause of the issue.
Solution:
Replacing the ball joints should resolve the problem.

Engine management warning light
Problem:
If the engine management warning light appears on the dashboard, it is usually caused by one of two sensors. It could be the coolant temperature sensor or the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. If the issue is with the MAF sensor, you will most likely notice problems such as the engine idling poorly and/or a lack of power or acceleration.
Solution:
Perform a diagnostic check to accurately identify which sensor is causing the fault. If it's the coolant temperature sensor, you will need to buy a replacement to resolve the issue. If it's the MAF sensor, you can remove it and clean it with MAF sensor cleaner to fix the problem. If cleaning the MAF sensor doesn’t work, a replacement will be necessary. We can help you find engine sensors at very low prices.
Difficulty level
Tailgate very stiff
Problem:
There have been known issues with the tailgate being very stiff on the Superb. If you find that it is not opening as smoothly as it should, it is because the hinges are not being lubricated enough.
Solution:
Lubricate the hinges with something like WD40 to fix the problem.

Fire Risk
Problem:
There is a serious risk of a car fire.
Solution:
If your Superb was built between 2008 and 2009, then you need to check that work has been done to rectify the faulty heating element. If it hasn't, then there is a chance of a vehicle fire. It's an easy fix though and requires nothing more than a tightening of the earth element. This is an easy job that you can do yourself, but it's best to have it done by a professional so that the work is logged.

Strong Smell of Fuel
Problem:
There is a strong smell of fuel inside and outside the car, and you are using more diesel than you used to.
Solution:
This is likely to be a fault with your high-pressure fuel pipes, which are prone to leaks. You may be able to solve this issue by installing anti-vibration weights, which we always have in stock and can deliver directly to you.
Difficulty level
No Front Turn Signal
Problem:
One or both of your front turn signals is not working.
Solution:
This will mean a trip to your nearest Skoda dealer for a software update of the onboard supply control unit.
Difficulty level
Malfunctioning Electronics
Problem:
Many of your electrical functions have stopped working.
Solution:
This should only affect your Superb if it was built between May and December 2015. An incorrectly installed cable clamp is to blame, located inside the fuel fuse box. You can order a new clamp from our parts list and install it yourself to replace the now damaged one.
Difficulty level
Seatbelt and Airbag Tensioners
Problem:
Your airbags and seat belt tensioners fail to trigger if you have an accident.
Solution:
If your Superb was built between May and November 2016, check that the recall work has been done to rectify the seat belt tensioners and the airbags. If it hasn't been done yet, then you'll need to replace them. If your Superb is still under warranty, then Skoda will do this work for no cost. They may even do it if you're not covered by warranty. If not, you can order working seat belt tensioners and airbag units direct from BreakerYard.

Shattered Rear Wheel Bearing Housing
Problem:
The housing for your rear wheel bearings has shattered.
Solution:
This doesn't affect a great many Superbs, but if yours was built in August 2017, then the metal housing wasn't hardened correctly. If your car is still under warranty, then Skoda should replace the housing for free. If not, you can easily find a new housing in our store and have it delivered to you.
Difficulty level
Airbag Fault
Problem:
In the event of a collision, your airbag deploys too slowly.
Solution:
Unfortunately, you may not know you even have this problem until it's too late. If your Superb was built in the first two months of 2018, then you should check that a new airbag unit has been installed by a Skoda dealer.

Not Enough Torque
Problem:
You are not getting enough engine torque when driving at low speeds.
Solution:
There's not a lot you can do here apart from heading to a Skoda dealer and getting a software update.
