The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet was a cabriolet version of the legendary Volkswagen Golf - a hugely successful model that has won a variety of awards during its seven generations. The Golf Cabriolet was first seen in 1979 for the 1980 model year, with a number of more recent models being introduced to complement the updated Golf collection. The Golf Cabriolet was discontinued in 2002, to be replaced by the VW New Beetle Cabriolet. It did however return in 2011 after a lengthy break.

The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet has been a hugely successful step into the cabriolet sector for the German carmaker, with the first model hitting the road more than 30 years ago. The Golf Cabriolet was praised for its impressive build quality and handling, although cramped seats in the rear were an issue for some reviewers.

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet (1980 - Present)

The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet was first seen for the 1980 model year, six years after the first generation VW Golf was introduced. These Golf models were seen to be a modern replacement for the VW Beetle, boasting front-wheel-drive and long-range replacement. With the first cabriolet model being a success for the German carmaker they were not in a hurry to replace it, which meant that when the Mk2 Golf was released in 1983 there was not a Mk2 version of the Cabriolet. Instead the Mk1 was continued throughout the entire Mk2 production run.

For the third gen of the Golf, in 1991, VW decided to refresh the Cabriolet. Towards the end of 1993 a whole new Mk3-based Golf Cabriolet was released, designed to replace the now aging Mk1 model after 13 years on the market. Its body style was was very similar to the Mk3 Golf from its launch up until 1999, when it was given a facelift. This facelift was designed to bring the Mk3-gen Cabriolet into line stylistically with the new Golf Mk4. This meant that although there was not a new cabriolet released, the facelift gave the existing Golf Cabriolet new bumpers, grille and headlights, which made it sit in line with the fourth generation Golf. This model continued to be produced until 2002.

The VW Golf Cabriolet was discontinued in 2002, when it was replaced by the VW New Beetle Cabriolet and the VW Eos. It was however revived in 2011, when Volkswagen decided to release a new version of the Golf Cabriolet. With the new model based on the Golf MkVI it has a lot going for it, with many reviewers saying that there are very few compromises between the cabriolet model and the standard Golf.

With this new cabriolet version refinement was at the heart of VW''s plan, something which reviewers definitely noticed. A common problem with cabriolet models is the amount of wind noise, but Auto Express say that you can easily hold a conversation at the national speed limit when the roof is down. They also praise the engine selection, with both petrol and diesel options depending on what a buyer prefers. The top of the range Golf Cabriolet R model comes with a whole host of added features, including better handling and rapid acceleration paired with two large chrome exhaust pipes, 19-inch alloys and even different bodykits. Perfect if you want to go for something with a sportier feel.
