The 406 Coupe was part of the Peugeot 406 line of vehicles. Designed to be large family cars, the 406 collection was manufactured by the French carmaker Peugeot from 1994 to 2004, with the 406 Coupe variant available between 1997 and 2003. As well as the Coupe, the 406 was also available as a saloon and an estate. The 406 was replaced by the Peugeot 407 after production had ceased.

The Peugeot 406 Coupe was very well received by the motoring press, with What Car? going as far as to call it a ''breath of fresh air''. Its clean, sleek lines were praised for offering something different in the coupe market, although many felt that this high level of style did not follow through once inside the cabin.

 

Peugeot 406 Coupe (1997 - 2003)

Using the same platform as the Citroen Xantia, the Peugeot 406 Coupe was released in 1997. The styling of these 406 models was largely inspired by the earlier 405 vehicle, which was phased out before the launch of the 406 range. When it came to the 406 Coupe the model was designed and manufactured by designers Lorenzo Ramaciotti and Davide Arcangeli at Pininfarina, the Italian design studio. The styling was a huge plus point for the 406 Coupe, with a whole host of reviewers including What Car?, Parkers and Honest John all saying that the 406 Coupe is a beautiful car with tasteful styling, filled to the brim with Italian flair. Parkers even say that its "dignified looks lend it mini-Ferrari status". Some of its main competition comes from long-standing models like the Toyota Celica and the Hyundai Coupe.

Inside the model the 406 Coupe is spacious, with plenty of head and legroom and what could be called a surprisingly large boot for a two seater model. The seats are often referred to as less than comfortable however, with the rear two being a little bit of a snug fit for two adults.

Aside from its impressive looks the 406 Coupe was known for being good to drive, with a choice of four engines offered. From a 2.0 L entry-level option to a thirsty 3.0 L V6, there is plenty of choice when it comes to what lies under the bonnet. There is even a 2.2 HDi diesel offering which gives some good economical output. The 406 Coupe is widely praised for its handling, with plenty of grip going through corners and an impressively smooth suspension helping to create a comfortable ride for those in the car.

The 406 range has an average reliability record, with the standard 406 models, built on the same platform as the 406 Coupe, experiencing a number of recalls throughout the years. These have been due to concerns about wheel failure, bonnet safety catch issues and faults with the brake assemblies, so it''s worth paying attention to any old recalls if you''re looking to buy a model from within the 406 range. There are plenty of 406 Coupes on the market however, so you should have no trouble shopping around and finding the best option for your budget.

The 406 Coupe was renamed for its final year on sale, being referred to more simply as the Peugeot Coupe, dropping the 406 branding. After it was discontinued the entire 406 line was replaced by the 407.
