About Steering Rack

One of the most popular steering systems in modern motor vehicles is the rack and pinion system. The Avensis Toyotasteering rack forms one part of the mechanics of this system. One of the reasons for the system’s popularity is undoubtedly its simplicity. In a typical non-powered steering system a set of rack and pinion gears is enclosed in a metal tube. Each end of the rack protrudes from the ends of the tube. Each end of the Avensis Toyotasteering rack is connected to a rod, known as a tie rod. The pinion is connected to the steering shaft and when the steering wheel is turned it causes the pinion gear to spin, which moves the Avensis Toyotasteering rack transversely. The tie rods on either side of the rack connect to spindles on the car wheels. The transverse movement of the rack thereby causes the wheels to turn right and left according to the direction in which the vehicle is being steered.

In a power steering system the design of the Avensis Toyotasteering rack has one or two variations. A section of the rack is connected to a cylinder with a piston in the centre, which has a fluid port on either side. Hydraulic fluid is provided to either side of the piston, which causes the Avensis Toyotasteering rack to move, producing the power assisted steering.

Toyota Avensis trivia

  • The Toyota Avensis is extremely popular as a taxi. The 509-litre boot capacity means that taxi drivers can let their passengers bring as much luggage as they like.
  • Although the 2008 third-generation Toyota Avensis was released at the height of the global recession, it still managed to get 8% of all sales in the mid-size car range.
  • The seats in a Toyota Avensis have a Shearing’s coach-style trim, which means that they are resistant to dog hair (perfect for when you want to take your furry family members for a day out).
  • The best ever year for the Toyota Avensis in terms of sales was in 2004 when it saw an impressive 142,535 units sold across Europe. There were a few positive blips after that, but sales gradually reduced until 2019, when only 897 were sold in Europe.
