About Actuator

The Prius Toyota actuator is a motor which is part of an automatic transmission system and its job is to push the clutch release arm, removing drive from the engine to the gearbox. In a manual vehicle this role would usually be performed by the driver pressing their foot down on the clutch pedal.

The Prius Toyota actuator is self-adjusting which means that when the clutch cover and pressure plate wear down the Prius Toyota actuator is capable of compensating for their wear. This adjusting mechanism is sensitive and, once an actuator is removed it will be destroyed, so if the Prius Toyota actuator shows signs of failure it is not possible to repair it and it should be removed. When the Prius Toyota actuator is replaced it is essential to also replace the clutch cover, plate and bearing alongside it to ensure correct operation.

Symptoms of a Prius Toyota actuator being faulty can include frequent stalling, an inability to engage drive from start-up and depending on the make and model of the vehicle, or a warning light appearing on the dashboard alerting you to a fault. On inspection of the Prius Toyota actuator you may find that it appears hot, which can indicate a jammed part.

Toyota Prius trivia

  • The flat centre console and the flattened floor makes it much easier for drivers to get out of their Toyota Prius when they've parked somewhere tight. To make it even easier, the Toyota Prius door hinges are slanted for wider opening.
  • Between the launch of the Toyota Prius in Japan in 1997 and its release in the UK, an incredible 43,000 had already been sold. Even before general release, that equals more electric vehicles than had been sold since the 1960s
  • Different countries have different emissions regulations, and just because a make or model will pass in one market, doesn't mean that it will pass in another. The Toyota Prius is the first-ever vehicle to be compliant with emissions regulations across three different continents: Europe, the US, and Japan.
  • In the UK, the Toyota Prius is ranked as the 29th most popular car, according to the YouGov website. It also comes in at number 10 on the list of most famous cars. Fans of the car obviously praise its fuel-efficiency, but also its reliability and the low cost of maintenance.
  • The third-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive unit is both 35% more powerful and 23% more fuel-efficient than the first gen. It's also 25% cleaner when you measure CO2 emissions!
