About Steering Rack

One of the most popular steering systems in modern motor vehicles is the rack and pinion system. The Prius Toyotasteering rack forms one part of the mechanics of this system. One of the reasons for the system’s popularity is undoubtedly its simplicity. In a typical non-powered steering system a set of rack and pinion gears is enclosed in a metal tube. Each end of the rack protrudes from the ends of the tube. Each end of the Prius Toyotasteering rack is connected to a rod, known as a tie rod. The pinion is connected to the steering shaft and when the steering wheel is turned it causes the pinion gear to spin, which moves the Prius Toyotasteering rack transversely. The tie rods on either side of the rack connect to spindles on the car wheels. The transverse movement of the rack thereby causes the wheels to turn right and left according to the direction in which the vehicle is being steered.

In a power steering system the design of the Prius Toyotasteering rack has one or two variations. A section of the rack is connected to a cylinder with a piston in the centre, which has a fluid port on either side. Hydraulic fluid is provided to either side of the piston, which causes the Prius Toyotasteering rack to move, producing the power assisted steering.

Toyota Prius trivia

  • When the third-generation Toyota Prius was released, there had already been 1.7 million sales of hybrid cars around the world. More than 70% of those sales were a Toyota Prius. When the third-gen Prius completed its production run, 3.5million had been sold.
  • The engine on a first-generation Toyota Prius will redline at only 4,500rpm. This helps the car to be more fuel-efficient because it means lighter parts can be used in the design.
  • The Toyota Prius has featured in some huge films and has even been featured in Oscar-winning cinema. Emma Stone's character in La La Land drives a Prius, and there's an animated version of the car in The Secret Life of Pets. In Avengers: Infinity War, there are around 20 moments where a Toyota Prius is seen.
  • In a fresh touch, the rear window in a Toyota Prius has been coated with a material made from ceramic sunshade. This reduces heat levels on the inside, while also shading passengers in the back seats.
  • The second-generation Prius could get 600 miles in a single charge. The third generation added an extra 100 miles to that, and that's despite having the same sized engine!
