About ECU

What is the ECU/what does it do?

The term ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is a universal name given to a variety of electronic control systems found in a car. Collectively they make up the car's computer or brain which controls and regulates key components of the vehicle.

Getting into the details of the ECU

ECU’s are located within the dashboard or engine bay. It is often possible to ‘read’ or interrogate your car's various ECU’s using a laptop computer with relevant software and cable or a dedicated reader via a connection port which is usually located in the dashboard. This method is used by mechanics for diagnosis of certain vehicle faults.

An ECU controls or governs aspects of a car's systems including, but not limited to, the engine, ABS, suspension, automatic gearbox and power steering.

What if something goes wrong with the ECU?

Like any electronic component an ECU can fail for a number of reasons including short circuits, dry solder joints, water damage or age. Diagnosis is generally much easier with the correct reader which can be used to obtain error codes from ECU.

Smart trivia

  • Smart doesn’t offer a huge range of vehicles. The most popular is the Smart ForTwo, but the ForFour is growing in popularity. You might also have seen the Smart Brabus, which is larger but still considered a microcar.
  • You can fit a Smart car in a variety of strange places, and these have actually been tested! Some of the weirdest places that you can park a Smart car include the basket of the world’s largest hot air balloon, the narrowest street in London (Crawford Passage), and in the parking bay of a Predator 180 yacht!
  • There are three variations of the Smart ForTwo. These are the Pure, the Passion, and the Pulse. Each one comes with its own unique special features, but the differences are relatively minor, such as leather-covered steering wheels or improved stereo systems. The Pure is the only one of the three that comes with a 50-hp engine.
  • Smart cars are very light and can weigh as little as 1,940 pounds. That’s just 63.5 kilos!
  • Mercedes-Benz, the manufacturers of Smart, were surprised to see that a Smart car was featured in the 2006 movie The Da Vinci Code, saying that “We certainly didn’t pay” for the product placement. You can also see Smart cars make an appearance in the Pink Panther remakes of the mid-2000s and the Gerard Butler film Geostorm of which they did pay for.
