What Is the Tailgate of a Car?
The tailgate is the rear panel of a car that provides access to the vehicle’s boot (trunk).
It is typically hinged at the top and lifts upwards to allow easy loading and unloading of luggage, groceries, or larger items. In hatchbacks, SUVs, and estate cars, the tailgate forms an essential part of the rear bodywork and often includes integrated tailgate glass, a wiper motor, tail lights, and sometimes a built-in spoiler.
A tailgate car part may also house the number plate and various wiring for lights, cameras, or boot release systems.
What Is the Difference Between a Tailgate and a Trunk?
While both terms refer to the rear storage area of a car, they are used differently depending on the vehicle type and region:
- In the UK, car boot is the common term for the rear storage space, and the tailgate refers to the panel or door that provides access to it.
- In saloon (sedan) vehicles, the rear panel is usually called a trunk lid, which opens on car boot hinges and is separate from the rear window.
- In hatchbacks and SUVs, the tailgate includes the rear window (tailgate glass) and opens as one complete unit.
So, the difference lies mainly in design, tailgates are larger, incorporate the window, and are common on more practical, load-friendly vehicles.
What Is the Tailgate Made Of?
A car tailgate is typically made from pressed steel or aluminium for strength, with some modern models using plastic or composite panels to reduce weight. Key components include:
- Outer panel – painted to match the car’s body
- Inner frame – supports mechanical parts and internal trim
- Tailgate glass – bonded or bolted in place, often heated for demisting
- Wiring harness – powers number plate lights, rear wiper, and sometimes a reversing camera
- Locking mechanism – central locking or manual release
- Tailgate hinges – allow the panel to pivot upwards smoothly
- Gas struts - help hold the tailgate open and control its motion
Common Tailgate Issues
Tailgates are used frequently and exposed to weather, which can lead to various issues over time:
- Broken tailgate hinges are making the panel misaligned or difficult to open
- Cracked or shattered tailgate glass from impacts or accidents
- Worn gas struts are causing the tailgate to fall unexpectedly
- Corrosion on the lower edge of the tailgate from road salt and moisture
- Electrical faults in rear lights, wipers, or boot locks
- Damaged locking mechanisms are causing access problems
Whether it’s cosmetic damage or mechanical failure, a faulty tailgate can compromise vehicle function and safety.
Replacing Your Tailgate
If your car’s tailgate is damaged, dented, rusted, or not functioning properly, you may need a replacement tailgate. It's essential to choose a part that matches your car’s make, model, and year to ensure proper fit and compatibility with electrical and mechanical systems.
When replacing the tailgate, check whether the following are included or need to be transferred from your old unit:
- Tailgate glass
- Wiring and bulbs
- Interior trim
- Locking system
- Gas struts and hinges
