History of Daewoo Matiz
The Daewoo Matiz is a five-door supermini that was produced by the Korean manufacturer from 1998 to 2005, when it became the Chevrolet Matiz. The Matiz replaced the Tico and was designed for city and town driving. Its design was based on a Fiat Cinquecento concept that Fiat didn''t want to use. After its launch, the diminutive Matiz became the best-selling Daewoo in Europe for four years. Its cheap running costs and low insurance bracket make it a popular first car. The Daewoo Matiz is a relatively reliable car with average servicing costs. Warranty Direct ranks it 35th out of 50 superminis in its Reliability Index, above the Citroen C3 and below the Rover CityRover.
Daewoo Matiz (1998 - 2005)
The original Matiz was codenamed M100. The exterior design of this model was based on the Lucciola, a Fiat concept car designed by Italdesign Giugiaro that was rejected by Fiat. The engine was just 800cc and could reach a top speed of 89 mph with its 51 bhp. The Daewoo Matiz engine was developed from that of its predecessor, the Tico, by Tickford, a British company based in Milton Keynes. That''s not the only British connection for the Matiz; it was engineered at Daewoo''s Worthing Technical Centre in England.
The first generation Daewoo Matiz had three trim levels: E, S and SE. The top of the range SE may have had air conditioning, a rear spoiler and fog lights but features that would now be considered standard were optional. These include power steering, central locking, electric front windows, ABS and a driver''s airbag. In 2000, the Daewoo Matiz received a three-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.
The Daewoo Matiz received a facelift, codename M150, which was exported to the UK from 2001. The facelift was designed at the Worthing Technical Centre and gave the car a more rounded look. The front of the car was modified to make room for the anticipated new 1.0 L S-Tec engine, although this new engine wasn''t actually introduced until after General Motors took over Daewoo in 2002. This new 995 cc engine could must 62 bhp. The Matiz was sold under the Daewoo badge until 2004, when it became the Chevrolet Matiz, and later the Chevrolet Spark.
