History of Kia Picanto

The Kia Picanto is a small car that has been in production since 2004. So far there have been two generations, produced in South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Chile. It''s a popular car in areas across the globe, winning multiple awards on a yearly basis, such as Car Dealer Magazine''s ''Used Car of the Year Award'' in 2014. The Kia Picanto is a popular car and well-received by the press. It made Auto Car''s Top 5 list of city cars in 2015. Warranty Direct ranked it 21st in a ''top 100'' list of cars based on reliability. The Picanto also ranked ninth out of 50 superminis, with a score of 27, compared to first place''s six points and 50th''s 202. The scores are based on a number of factors in relation to reliability, such as the number of times a car breaks down, the costs of repair and the average amount of time spent off road due to repairs being done.

First generation Kia Picanto (2004 to 2011)

The Picanto was first launched in 2003, showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was based on a shortened platform of the Hyundai Getz. The Kia Picanto was offered in a five door hatchback body style. It received three out of five stars for adult occupant safety at the Euro NCAP crash tests in 2004, with four stars for child occupant safety.

Kia wanted to appeal to the European market, so the Picanto was equipped with features like a CD player with MP3 audio playback, air conditioning, front and patented rear electric windows, remote central locking and electric mirrors. The Picanto had a facelift in 2008, introducing minor changes to the light clusters. Kia also introduced a new bumper and front grille. It had another facelift in 2010, with minor interior and exterior changes, such as a new front fascia that incorporated the "tiger nose" grille Kia used across its range.

Second generation Kia Picanto (2011 to present)

The Mk2 Kia Picanto made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011. It was designed by Kia''s European design team in Germany, under the direction of Peter Schreyer. Kia decided to make the new model longer in wheelbase and overall length, offered with a choice of two petrol engines: a 1.0 litre three cylinder or 1.25 litre four cylinder. The second generation Picanto received four out of five stars for overall safety at the Euro NCAP crash tests in 2011, with an adult occupant safety score of 86% and 83% for children.
