History of Kia Sorento

Kia first launched the Sorento back in 2002, as the brand''s first full size SUV. Progressing into the midsize crossover SUV class, now in its third generation, the most recent version of the Sorento has been praised by the motoring press for its improved practicality, with all of the Sorento models boasting an impressive level of refinement paired with a good selection of standard kit. The Kia Sorento was a new step for the South Korean carmaker, earning a strong reputation since it launched back in 2002. Auto Express praised the Sorento for its refinement and interior quality, although they do say that the anonymous styling and firm ride can be seen as negatives.

First Generation Kia Sorento (2002 - 2010)

The first generation of the Kia Sorento was launched in 2002, with a traditional body-on-frame basis often seen on truck-type vehicles. This model was seen as the first full size SUV for the South Korean manufacturer. For many markets the Sorento was initially available in either the LX or EX trim level.

Two transmission options were offered: a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic on models made before 2005, with models after this getting a five-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox. A Hyundai-made 3.5 L 24-valve V6 engine was used on many first gen Sorento models, with other features including four-wheel disc brakes and optional ABS.

Second Generation Kia Sorento (2010 - 2015)

The Sorento was redesigned and launched as a second gen model in 2010. This move to a crossover car-based SUV styling was first seen from the marque in South Korea during the previous year. This Mk2 model used Kia''s new corporate grille, known as the Tiger Nose, with a change to unibody construction instead of the previous truck based frame. In 2012 the Sorento was updated, although the changes were more of a facelift - which led the motoring press to claim that this did not deserve to be classified as a new model.

This Sorento was the first model to be made in the United States, at Kia''s new facility in West Point, Georgia. This plant also builds the Sorento''s sister vehicle, the Hyundai Santa Fe.

In 2011 the Mk2 Sorento was tested for its overall safety features by Euro NCAP. It was awarded the full five star rating.

Third generation Kia Sorento (2016 - present)

Kia revealed that the latest version of the in South Korea in 2014, with it making its debut at the Paris Motor Show the same year for the European markets. This Mk3 model uses the same platform as the 2015 Kia Carnival/Sedona vehicle, sharing many of the same interior features. It can seat either five or seven passengers depending on the seat configuration, with a longer overall length when compared to its predecessors. It was made lower however, to help keep the handling effective, with a boost in overall rigidity by 14%.

For the UK market the new range of Sorento vehicles consists of the entry level KX-1, working up to the top of the range KX-4. Kia say that this generation "builds on the heritage of its popular predecessor whilst boasting a long bonnet, low roofline and swept-back silhouette which all contribute to its dynamic proportions and sleek design."

A 2.2 L CRDi AWD engine is the only option available with this new model, paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
