History of Renault Laguna

The Renault Laguna is a large family car that was available in the UK from 1994 to 2012, when export to the UK market ceased. There were three generations of the Laguna, with the second gen being awarded 2002 Semperit Irish Car of the Year in Ireland. The Renault Laguna is a good car to drive but it struggled to compete with the likes of the Ford Mondeo and VW Passat, and was riddled with reliability issues. The Laguna was available in the UK for 18 years. It was Renault''s large family car that sat between the Megane and the Safrane in terms of size and specification. There were three generations of Renault Laguna produced during its production.

Laguna I (Body B56/K56) (1993 - 2000)

The first generation Renault Laguna was launched in December 1993, before going on sale in early 1994, to replace the Renault 21. To begin with the Laguna I was only available as a hatchback; the estate was launched in late 1995.

All models of the first gen Renault Laguna had a good spec with power steering, electric front windows and remote central locking included as standard. Most of the range had driver''s airbags. The trim levels available were the RN, RT and RXE and there was also the option of adding a sports pack to the 2-litre version get a deep front spoiler, rear spoiler and alloy wheels.

In 1998 there was a moderate facelift with a redesigned front and tail lights. This facelift also included updated engines, with five new ones added to the lineup. There were now nine different engines available for the Laguna I; six petrols and three turbo diesels.

The last edition of the Laguna I to be produced was the Laguna Concorde that featured half-leather seats and an onboard voice synthesizer warning system, which verbally told you when doors were left open, etc. The first Laguna was plagued with poor reviews and reliability issues.

Laguna II (Body X74) (2000 - 2007)

The second generation Renault Laguna was an all-new model. It shared its chassis with the Nissan Primera and featured upgraded engines and a lengthy equipment list. The Laguna II was available in hatchback and estate styles. One of the features was the ''keyless'' entry and ignition system. A key card is used to unlock the car remotely and is then slot into the car before the driver presses the ''Start'' button to start the engine.

The Laguna II was widely considered to be one of the safest vehicles on the road; it was the first vehicle available in Europe to achieve a five star EuroNCAP rating. Unfortunately, it suffered from a wide range of issues with electrics, mechanicals and build quality. This didn''t prevent the Laguna II from being awarded 2002 Semperit Irish Car of the Year.

The model was revamped for spring 2004 with a new GT model added to the lineup. The Laguna GT featured a range of mod cons including cruise control and satnav. The facelift also upgraded the torque of the dCi 120 engine from 270 Nm to 300 Nm.

There was another facelift in March 2005 that redesigned the front air intake so it looked like the one on the Megane, with an electronic handbrake also introduced. At the end of the year, a new 2.0 diesel engine was introduced that could produce 150 hp. In March 2006 another variant of the same engine was launched that could produce 175 hp. At the time this was the most powerful 2-litre diesel engine in production.

Laguna III (Body X91) (2007 - 2012)

The Laguna III was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007. It was based on platform D, which was shared with Nissan Altima, Nissan Teana and the Nissan Murano. The Renault Laguna III was available as a five-door hatchback, five-door estate ''Sport Tourer'' and three-door coupe, which was launched in October 2008. The third generation Laguna introduced two new engines; a V6 dCi that could deliver 235 hp and a 3.5l petrol V6 that offers 240 hp.

At the 2010 Paris Motor Show the Renault Laguna II Phase 2 was unveiled. This facelift model had a more aggressive front end and a high level standard spec on all models including Bluetooth, air conditioning and an MP3 compatible stereo. The facelifted Laguna II was only available in three trim levels now; the Expression, Dynamique TomTom and GT Line TomTom.
