SEAT Toledo Common Problems and Solutions

More Force Needed To Brake

Problem:

You have to apply a lot more force to get the car to come to a complete stop.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is being caused by a tension crack on the vacuum pipe that feeds into the brake servo. It’s a manufacturing fault, but it’s a fairly straightforward fix. Check your vacuum pipes and find replacements on our parts page for the Toledo. Installation is relatively simple.

Gradual Loss of Brake Power

Problem:

You can feel that the anti-lock brakes are gradually becoming less effective, increasing stopping distance.

Models affected:

Solution:

A challenging job to do yourself, this fault is being caused by reversed polarity feed to the anti-lock brake electronic control unit. You can try to take the control unit apart so that you can adjust the wiring system, but you’ll need to know exactly what you're doing. The alternative is to remove the control unit and order a new one from BreakerYard.

DPF warning light

Problem:

On third generation beyond Toledos, the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) can get blocked when using the car for mainly shorter journeys i.e. around town. The DPF cannot get hot enough to burn off the unwanted particles, which switches the DPF warning light on the dashboard.

Models affected:

Solution:

You can take the car onto an open road and drive at around 2500rpm in 4th gear for about 5-10 miles to allow the DPF to get hot enough to burn off the particles. This should turn off the warning light on the dashboard. If it does not turn off the warning light, you could have a problem with the sensor or you might need to remove the DPF and clean it out manually.

Difficulty level

1

Lack of power

Problem:

The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor is known to fail, causing a loss of power. This will be particularly noticeable at higher speeds. The acceleration will be poorer than normal.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to remove the MAF sensor and clean it with MAF sensor cleaner to remove any dirt. Refitting the cleaned sensor should rectify the situation. Watch the video below to see how to do this:

Poor idling

Problem:

If you are having issues with poor engine idling, then it could be the coolant temperature sensor at fault. If the idling gets better as the engine warms up then this is the cause of the failure.

Models affected:

Solution:

Fitting a replacement coolant temperature sensor will sort the problem.

Engine misfiring

Problem:

The ignition coils can fail on the Toledo. If the engine management light has appeared on your dashboard and the engine is misfiring instead of having constant revs when idling, then this is your problem.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to replace the ignition coil to resolve the issue.

Boot lock failing

Problem:

It is known for the boot lock to get jammed on the first and second generation Toledo. This will result in problems with opening the boot.

Models affected:

Solution:

You need to clean and adjust the lock to sort the problem.

Difficulty level

No Tension On Seat Belt

Problem:

The seat belts for the front seats don’t lock into place when pulled forward suddenly.

Models affected:

Solution:

A number of Toledos were fitted with a faulty seat belt tensioner between 2015 and 2016. You’ll easily find a new tensioner in our store and installation should take less than 20-minutes.

Child Lock Disengaging

Problem:

The child lock for the rear door fails to engage so that the doors can be opened from the inside.

Models affected:

Solution:

This potentially dangerous problem caused a recall by Seat and affects Toledos built between 2015 and 2016. If your car is still under warranty, then your nearest Seat dealer should rectify it for free. If you’re not under warranty, then you’re going to have to order a new locking mechanism from our parts list, remove the door panels, and install the non-faulty one.
