History of Suzuki Ignis
The Suzuki Ignis is a little known car that was in production for less than ten years. The Ignis is a supermini styled like a micro 4x4 that''s solidly built and boasts lots of space. It was first produced in 2000 in Japan and exported to the UK. The second generation was built in Europe and was on sale from 2003 to 2008. The Suzuki Ignis was rated 21st out of 50 superminis in Warranty Direct''s Reliability Index. The Suzuki Ignis is a supermini produced by Japanese car manufacturer Suzuki between 2000 and 2008. It''s a well built car with average reliability and relatively low cost repairs.
First Generation Suzuki Ignis (2000 - 2003)
The first Suzuki Ignis was built in Japan as both three- and five-door hatchbacks. It was powered by the new generation of the manufacturer''s inline-four petrol engines, the M family. These engines feature DOHC, four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. The only engine available in the the UK was the 1.3-litre, that could produce 82 bhp. The transmission was five-speed manual as standard, with the option of a four-speed auto box. Of the two trim levels, GA and GL, GA was very basic and the GL only had alloys, deadlocks and central locking added to the specification.
Second Generation Suzuki Ignis Europe (2003 - 2008)
The Ignis was updated for the European market in 2003. The small Suzuki was offered as a Chevrolet or Holden Cruze in the US and Australian markets. The Euro update in 2003 used the modifications seen on the Cruze as opposed to the next gen Japanese Ignis. The new Suzuki Ignis was 145mm longer than the older one, which improved both the interior and luggage space.
The 2003 model was built specifically for the European market in Esztergom, Hungary by Magyar Suzuki. The 1.3-litre was now only available as a manual but a 1.5-litre engine was added to the lineup, which was available with either manual or automatic transmission. The manual was also available as an all-wheel drive named the 4Grip. A diesel engine, the Multijet borrowed from Fiat, became available from 2005.
This European-specific Ignis had different trims. The 1.3 engine only came in the basic GL trim but its specification was more generous than the previous model. The GL came with a CD player, remote central locking, side airbags and electric front windows. The 1.5 engine only came as the GLX, which added alloy wheels and air conditioning to the spec. Production of the Suzuki Ignis ended in 2008.
Suzuki Ignis Sport
The Sport version of the Suzuki Ignis was launched in 2003. This ''hot hatch'' had a 110 bhp 1.5-litre engine, a body kit, lowered and firmer suspension, a close ratio gearbox and tuned exhaust. Inside, there were Recaro sport seats, white instrument dials with blue illumination and carbon effect panels. The Sport was in production in 2005.
