Toyota Auris Common Problems and Solutions
Engine Malfunction Light is Lit
Problem:
The engine is running in forced mode, and the Engine Malfunction Indicator lamp is on.
Solution:
It's very likely that your particulate filter (DPF) is blocked, which is usually caused when your car doesn't get the chance to go on longer journeys. You can clear it out or order a replacement from our drop-down menu. If that fails to resolve the issue, then you may need to upgrade the engine computer software.

Handbrake Is Faulty
Problem:
When the driver's seat is in the fully forward position, the handbrake becomes much more difficult to activate.
Solution:
Caused by the incorrect adjustment of the mechanism that controls the handbrake, you don't need any replacement parts to fix this issue. Pull your handbrake up to the first notch, and then drive 400 metres at 40km/h. Then stop, release the handbrake and wait for five minutes. Repeat until the handbrake level is fully functional.

Noisy Rear Brake
Problem:
You can hear a noise from the rear brakes when they are applied, often accompanied by a strong odour.
Solution:
This will be caused by the rear brake lining being stuck in the brake calliper bracket. It's usually the result of corrosion and the build-up of dirt. You will need to apply modified rear brake pads that you can buy directly from our store.
Difficulty level
Bumpy Driving
Problem:
You can feel every bump in the road while driving, particularly from the back of the car.
Solution:
This happens a lot with some models of the Auris. It's being caused by a separated rear suspension arm. In most cases, you will need to find a replacement arm on our site and replace it. That's because it will usually become damaged when it separates and can't be reinstalled safely.

Rear Brakes Are Weak (E150 only)
Problem:
The rear brakes are not as effective as they were.
Solution:
This only applies to the E150 and is due to a detached rear brake calliper. Reattach them if possible, although if they have become damaged, then you may need to look at the replacement callipers on our parts list.
Difficulty level
Clutch Failure
Problem:
The clutch has started to slip and then fails completely.
Solution:
This is one of the more common problems with the Auris and will require a complete clutch system replacement. You can order the entire clutch system from our store and have it delivered directly to you, but you'll need a steady hand to remove the faulty one and install the new one.
Difficulty level
Squealing from Front Brakes
Problem:
You can hear squealing from the front brakes whenever you apply them.
Solution:
This is a problem that's been officially acknowledged by Toyota, and dealers have a service action to replace the brake pads and discs (as long as the car remains under warranty). Although this squealing noise isn't known to negatively affect braking ability, it's worth fixing just in case. You'll need to buy some replacement brake discs and brake pads from our Auris parts list and get rid of the faulty ones if your car is no longer under warranty.
Difficulty level
Heavy oil consumption
Problem:
The Auris is known for heavy oil consumption.
Solution:
You should keep a regular check on the oil levels, ensuring that the oil levels are about half way between the minimum and maximum lines on the oil dipstick. If the levels are low you will need to top up the oil. It is recommended to keep a small tub of oil in the boot in case you need to top up. If you are really concerned about this we would recommend you take the vehicle back to your local dealer to be checked.

Creaking doors
Problem:
You may have noticed that your doors have a real creaking noise when opening and closing. The usual cause of this is for the door check strap to rust. This strap is the part that when you open your door will hold the weight.
Solution:
You will need to have the door check strap lubricated to sort the problem.
Difficulty level
Front seat wear
Problem:
The Auris can have premature seat wear on the front drivers or passengers seat. The most common place to have early wear is at the base of the front of the seat.
Solution:
There are three things you can do about this problem: You can either leave it and just live with this problem. Option 2 is to have the seats re-covered, which can be quite costly. The final option is to buy your replacement seats with us at very low prices.

Lack of power/black smoke
Problem:
The Toyota Auris is known for having problems with a lack of power and/or bursts of black smoke from the exhaust. You may find the car also surging forward. Any one of these problems are symptoms of a blocked EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve.
Solution:
You can remove the EGR valve and give it a clean out to resolve this issue. You can watch the video below to see how to do this:

Whistling Sound From Engine
Problem:
When your engine hits 1600rpms, you can hear a whistling sound.
Solution:
If your Auris has the engine code 1ND-TV, then it has a faulty version of the turbocharger. You will have no choice but to find a new turbocharger, which we always have in stock and can deliver to you. You will then need to install the new turbocharger.
Difficulty level
Knocking Sound On Steering Column
Problem:
You can hear a knocking sound coming from the steering column while driving at low speeds, particularly on rough surfaces.
Solution:
It is extremely likely that you have excessive free travel in your EPS motor drive gears. You will need to find a replacement steering column in our parts list. Installing the new steering column can be time-consuming but is a simple process.
Difficulty level
Battery Draining
Problem:
The battery keeps draining.
Solution:
If your Auris was made between 2012 and 2014, then the problem will most likely be a faulty hazard light switch. It's been partially depressed and is causing unnecessary strain on your battery. You'll need to update the car's software or replace the hazard light switch yourself. You can find the replacement switch in our store, and it's very easy to install.
Difficulty level
Loss of Power
Problem:
The hybrid unit has shut down and the car has lost all power.
Solution:
This is a software issue that caused a recall by Toyota. Take your Auris to a dealership and they will be able to reprogram the Power Management ECU for free.
Difficulty level
Rough Driving and Misfires
Problem:
The car feels rough to drive, with the occasional engine misfire. You may also notice your rev counter moving up and down at odd times.
Solution:
Have a look at your injector clamp bolt torque. Some models of Auris were fitted with the wrong tightening torque. You can very easily order yours from our parts list and replace the faulty one.
