About Power Steering Boxs
Power steering, also known as power assisted steering, makes steering a motor vehicle easier for the driver by reducing the amount of force that is required to be applied to the steering wheel when trying to manoeuvre the car and almost every vehicle that is built nowadays has some form of power steering system.
Although electric power assisted steering is rising in popularity, by far the most prevalent system at present is hydraulic power.
Hydraulic steering employs a pump, which is normally driven by a belt. The pump generates pressure and the driver’s control is provided by either a rack and pinion or a Volvopower steering box. Whichever of the two systems is used, the basic operation is the same. The fluid pressure generated by the pump is used to push against a piston. When the steering wheel is turned, pressure flows to one side, causing the piston, which is attached to the steering gears, to move. The driver is thereby able to allow hydraulic pressure to do most of the work involved in turning the steering wheel.
Although the rack and pinion system is felt to provide lighter weight and greater control precision, the Volvo power steering box is considered to be harder wearing and possess greater durability.
Volvo trivia
- Volvo invented the lambda sond, which is a probe that senses oxygen. It is responsible for cutting down exhaust emissions by 90%, and has been called "the most significant breakthrough ever made in the control of vehicle exhaust emissions." Volvo waived the patent rights on this, and now almost every car on the planet has one installed.
- During the 1950s, Volvo was doing so well that they started offering five-years worth of insurance with every car sale. It wasn't a long-lived campaign.
- In their first year, Volvo manufactured a very impressive 1,383 vehicles; the Type-1 truck and the PV651. Only 327 of their vehicles were exported in that first year.
- Volvo is one of the oldest companies in the world to be trading on the Stock Exchange. They have been trading consistently since 1935. The majority of car manufacturers didn't even exist when the Stock Exchange opened.
- Volvo is a Latin word that means 'I spin,' although some later translations change the meaning slightly to 'I roll.'
