About Speedo Clocks

Probably the most studied dial on a vehicle’s dashboard is the speedo clock. Civic Honda Speedo clocks, which are normally driven electro-magnetically, are a dashboard instrument that advise the driver of the velocity at which the vehicle is travelling. This is obviously a vital component which not only enables the driver to maintain a safe driving speed but also ensures that the speed of the vehicle is kept within legal limits.

The way in which most Civic Honda speedo clocks work is quite straightforward. Basically, they operate through the transfer of information from the wheels of the vehicle to the speedo clock itself. This is achieved by means of the speedometer cable, which makes the connection between the turning wheels and the speedo clock. In simple terms, the faster the wheels turn the faster the cable rotates. This rotation creates an electro-magnetic reaction in a speed cup that is located inside the speedometer. This magnetic reaction is responsible for the creation of force, which pushes the needle of the speedometer. The faster the speedometer cable spins the greater are the magnetic forces that are created, causing more force and more movement of the speedo dial.

Civic Honda Speedo clocks are an essential component and it is illegal to drive without a working speedometer. If a speedo clock is faulty it should be repaired or replaced immediately.

Honda Civic trivia

  • The Type R Civic is famous for being much less fuel-efficient than its less sporty counterparts, but most owners accept that. Instead, they want the high performance, including the 305 horsepower and being easily capable of cruising along at 169mph.
  • The Honda Civic is more than just the most popular Honda ever made; it’s been in continuous production too. Launched in the early 70s, there has never been a time when a Honda Civic was not in production.
  • A Honda Civic is in the Guinness Book of World Records after driving 8,387 miles through all 24 countries in the EU in 2015. Officially, the world record is titled ‘Lowest fuel consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries (all cars)’. The Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC had to be unmodified, and the two drivers had to drive 600km every day!
  • Honda released three different styles of the eight-generation Civic, depending on the country. Europe got one style, the US got another, and Asia/Russian got their own style too. The European one was the fan favourite, though.
  • The Honda Civic is the sixth best-selling car of all time! However, those selling figures are helped by the fact that there has been a Civic in production since 1972.
