About Trailing Arm

A Countryman MINI trailing arm is one of the components of a motor vehicle’s linked rear suspension system. Its primary role is to connect the chassis, rear axle and shock absorbers. Because the shock absorbers are connected to the Countryman MINI trailing arm it is responsible for supporting the weight of the vehicle. It must also deal with the tension and compression forces that are generated between the rear wheel and the vehicle’s chassis under a variety of driving conditions. This means that the Countryman MINI trailing arm needs to have sufficient strength to withstand random road conditions and survive impacts from potholes, bumps, rocks and other road imperfections.

The Countryman MINI trailing arm is connected to the vehicle slightly forward of the rear axle.

Because it is such an important component of a vehicle’s suspension system, if the trailing arm fails to work it will have an immediate effect on its driveability. Like most vehicle parts, a trailing arm is susceptible to wear and tear. Indications that a Countryman MINI trailing arm has broken are a feel that the car is “wandering” from its rear, over-steering in adverse weather conditions and damage to the vehicle’s tyres, which can be severe.

MINI trivia

  • The Morris Minor Mini was the first British car to sell over one million units. It reached that landmark number back in 1961.
  • It might have been a tight fit, but 27 people can fit into a Mini. The Guinness Book of Records confirmed that 27 could fit into the classic model Mini, although 28 people managed to get into the BMW Mini in 2012. The 27-person record was performed by Dani and the Miniskirts during the London to Brighton Mini-Run.
  • There's a lot of wasted space in a lot of cars, but not the Mini. Designers say that as much as 80% of their car's interiors can be used by passengers.
  • 10 years after he invented the Austin Mini, Sir Alec Issigonis was knighted in 1969 for his contribution to Britain.
  • MINI sells between 40,000 and 65,000 cars in the US every year, although that number is slowly dropping at the moment as smaller cars are going out of fashion.
