About Indicator Wiper Stalks

The BMW indicator wiper stalk is attached to the steering column via a multi-connecting plug, and is operated by the driver using a lever. When the lever is pushed, the wipers that are located on the indicators start moving in an arcing motion to clean dirt from the vehicle’s indicators with the aid of washing fluid from the washer system. The indicators wipers are powered by a motor consisting of a series of 4 bar linkages.

Problems with the BMW indicator wiper stalk can be caused through general wear and tear through consistent use. Many modern vehicles will display an error message or give warning if there is an issue with any element of the wiper system and it may be possible to diagnose the cause of stalk failure by using a circuit tester.

Other signs of BMW indicator wiper stalk failure could be noticed by a ‘loose’ lever when attempting to operate the indicator wipers, which can be caused by a broken stalk or signs of burn out on the electronic components. A failed BMW indicator wipe stalk may alternatively be too stiff to move easily which can cause the indicator wipers to stop functioning.

BMW trivia

  • The Cold War affected BMW sales so significantly that the company was nearly bought out by their arch-rivals Mercedes in 1959. A silent investor saved the company, but the rivalry between BMW and Mercedes Benz is ongoing.
  • Pop Art legend Andy Warhol was asked to hand paint a BMW, and he did the whole thing on a full-sized model in 24 minutes. He said afterwards, "I adore the car, it's much better than a work of art."
  • Everyone knows what the BMW logo looks like, but do you know what it represents? Most people think it's inspired by propellers (because of BMW's aviation history), but it's really just the same colour scheme as the Bavarian flag and was designed to showcase Bavaria.
  • It might not be the accessory that everyone needs, but for BMW drivers in South Africa who were worried about carjackers, the 'Blaster' was a flamethrower that shot huge flames from either side of the car. Not currently available in the UK…
  • One of the reasons older BMWs keep their value is because it's easy to get spare parts for even the oldest models. That's because BMW has carried on making car parts, even for cars that were built in WWII.
