About Steering Idlers
On a motor vehicle that has a conventional parallelogram steering linkage, the Mercedes-Benzsteering idler is a vital component, providing pivotal support. It achieves this by supporting the end of the centre link of the steering gear on the passenger side of the vehicle. The Mercedes-Benzsteering idler, which is alternatively referred to as the idler arm, is bolted to the frame or sub-frame of the vehicle. It is commonly attached between the opposite side of the centre link from the Pitman arm to the vehicle’s frame. From there, it holds the centre link at the appropriate height.
If the Mercedes-Benzsteering idler is not performing its function properly, the vehicle is likely to wander around the road. It is also likely that excessive play will be felt in the steering wheel. There are alternative possible causes for these issues, including the operation of connected assemblies such as the tie rods and the Pitman arm, although steering idlers are generally more susceptible to wear and tear than Pitman arms because of the pivoting function that is built into them.
A Mercedes-Benzsteering idler is relatively easy to fit and is not particularly expensive yet it is a critical component in the efficient operation of the steering linkage of a motor vehicle.
Mercedes-Benz trivia
- The Popemobile is a Mercedes Benz M-Class SUV. It's not a standard model, however, and has some added features like an inbuilt oxygen system and bulletproof glass.
- Karl Benz might have patented the design of his Motorwagen in 1886, but it was his wife who jumped behind the wheel first for a quick (as quick a 0.9hp will deliver) 120-mile tour through the countryside of Germany. Poor Karl didn't even know!
- We all recognise that distinctive Mercedes logo, but did you know that the three points of the star represent air, land, and water? There was a point where they considered adding another point to represent space, but they decided against it in the end.
- Ever noticed that you've never heard a Mercedes rattle or make any kind of squealing sound? You never will either, because all of their vehicles are welded in up to 10,000 places! You're not going to find a loose nut or bolt rolling around.
- Unlike most cars, Mercedes vehicles are not spray painted. Instead, they are completely submerged in anti-corrosion coating and primer. That means the protective liquid can get into every part of the car.
