About Transfer Boxs
The Audi transfer box, as the name suggests, transfers power to the front prop shaft. This prop shaft is attached to the rear prop shaft with a differential connecting the two. The power that’s generated in the front prop shaft is transferred through the differential to the rear prop shaft.
The Audi transfer box is part of the drivetrain on 4 x 4 and multi-axle vehicles and allows the driver to change between 4 x 4 and 2 x 2 wheel drive. It receives power from the transmission and uses either gears, hydraulics or in the case of some multi-axle vehicles, chain drive.
The Audi transfer box is designed for both on-road and off-road driving. The Audi transfer box can leak oil, which can be noticed either on the Audi transfer box or from the handbrake drum, depending on the position of the leaking seal. This leaking of oil will cause a loss of power steering. Other signs of a failing transfer box include a whining noise when you accelerate and a tapping noise as you decelerate. These issues can be accompanied with, or separate to a loss of braking ability and a loss of gears.
Audi trivia
- Audi has been responsible for many firsts in car design. One of the most impactful was the introduction of the dual-clutch gearbox, first seen in the Quattro S1 E2. Now, of course, they are commonplace.
- Audi was founded after the German engineer August Horch fell out with the co-founder of his first manufacturing company. He called the new company August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH, which doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.
- In 1971, Audi reached the landmark that all car manufacturers hope to hit sooner rather than later: the production of their millionth car. By 1976, they reached 2 million!
- The Audi R8 is made very unusually, and only 20 are rolled out of their factory on any given day. That’s because it's considered an honour to work on this model, and only the top 120 Audi employees are qualified enough.
- If you’ve ever looked at an Audi RS and mistaken it for a Porsche, you haven’t gone mad. The car was actually a collaboration with Porsche, and the RS has the distinctive grille and tailgate of the famous sports car.
